  1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

  2. ‘INLUCIUM’ • Our film definitely supports the codes and conventions of a real media product due to the concept of the storyline and the cinematography applied. When beginning to create our idea, we took inspiration from films such as Sherlock Homes, The Orphan and Fight Club as we found their cinematography particularly effective and therefore wanted to form our own interpretation from these ideas.

  3. Characters • As well as admiring the cinematography of other successful films, we also noted on the type of characters used. We wanted to incorporate a little insight to a family life, e.g. mother and daughter not seeing eye to eye. However, we thought in order to intrigue the audience further we would reveal the girl to have a physiological problem alongside the mother battling with alcoholism. We felt using both these characters could draw in a range of audience ages, ranging from 12 year olds to parenting age.

  4. Props and sound • We wanted to include a dramatic opening in order to capture the audiences attention instantly, we therefore did this through the use of props and sound. The mother can initially be seen cutting and chopping items of food with extremely sharp and dangerous knives and to further shock the audience we heightened the sound of these knives chopping so to indicate to the audience her aggressive behaviour. As well as getting the audience to think that perhaps these dangerous props could be used for something else later on in the film.

  5. Location • When considering where to shoot our opening sequence, we created a survey monkey to ask other people where they recommended we film, given the theme being horror/thriller. Almost all feedback we received suggested a house would be the best option as it would make the scene seem more real as people would be able to relate to the situation we are showing. • Watching the opening sequence back now I am very pleased we decided to go with this option as it really does fit in with the mood of the piece, as we also colour graded the lighting of the piece to also create a mystical atmosphere among both characters and the audience.

  6. Any Changes Made? • The only slight change we have made to our piece is at the right beginning. Initially we had collectively decided to have a voiceover of young children speaking negatively about the young character Sam. However, when watching the piece through we felt it would be best to not include it as it almost gave the concept of the idea away to quickly. Therefore we changed it to heavy rain at the beginning along with credits, to then suddenly change to the first opening shot.
