  1. Going from Good to Great!

  2. SWTJC – A Truly Regional Institution

  3. SWTJC – Salient Issues • SWTJC has grown by 49% in past five years

  4. STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Initiative • The Facts: • America's unprecedented prosperity at the start of the twenty-first century is fueled by the nation's science, engineering, and technology enterprise. • An increasingly large share of the work force consists of women, under-represented minorities, and persons with disabilities -- groups persistently under-represented in STEM careers.

  5. STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Initiative The Facts: • Unless the STEM labor market becomes more representative of the work force as a whole, the nation may well face severe shortages in STEM workers, such as are already seen in many computer-related occupations. • Public Schools and community colleges have an important part to play in attracting people to STEM careers because we see the greatest number of students from these underrepresented groups.

  6. STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Initiative • What SWTJC is doing: • NASA Math/Science Initiative (6 years of success) • NSF CSEMS Grant - $400,000 scholarships to attract to attract Computer Science, Engineering, and Math majors • Department of Defense Grant to build state-of-the-art distance learning classroom for STEM instruction. • Expansion of STEM course offerings in service area • Offering pre-engineering/computer science dual credit

  7. STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Initiative • What SWTJC is doing: • Addition of STEM joint degree plans with TAMUK, UTSA, Sul Ross, and other universities • LEGO Robot Team Challenge Program to encourage rising 9th graders and high school students to self-identify an interest in science and engineering • Partnering with UT Geosciences to explore ways to expand SWTJC majors and offerings in geology

  8. STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Initiative • What you can do: • Help us identify students with an interest and the potential to succeed in science and engineering • Expand the search beyond the traditional “gifted and talented” student pool • Use Lego Team Challenge and other activity oriented recruitment to “draw out” the hidden talent in your school • Work with SWTJC to reach more pre-engineering and computer science dual-credit students

  9. STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Initiative • What you can do: • Geoforce & SWTJC – We’re committed to this initiative but we need your help!
