Role of the HS Counselor The counselor is the one person who sees the entire picture of a student’s 4-year high school career and who can bring all that information together. • Address social / emotional needs • Assist with college & post-high school planning • Assist students in planning appropriate course schedules and determine how to best achieve educational goals

  4. Earning Credits • One school year = 2 semesters • Each semester students take 6 classes • Each class = 0.5 credit • 6 classes x 0.5 credit = 3.0 credits per semester • 6.0 credits Freshman Year • 6.0 credits Sophomore Year • 6.0 credits Junior Year • 6.0 credits Senior Year 24.0 credits possible

Graduation Requirements 4.0 credits English Language Arts 4.0 credits Mathematics 3.0 credits History / Social Sciences 3.0 credits Science 0.5 credit Personal Fitness 0.5 credit Health 2.0 credits World Language (2 years same language) 1.0 credit Visual, Performing & Applied Arts (VPAA) 6.0 credits Additional Elective Classes 24.0 credits

  6. Grade Level Promotion To be considered for grade level promotion, students must meet certain minimum credit requirements: 5.0 credits Sophomore Status 11.0 credits Junior Status 17.0 credits Senior Status

  8. Schedule Changes 1. Conflicts (two classes which meet the same hour) 2. Incomplete schedules (schedules with less than 6 hours of study) 3. Failure of a class 4. Changes due to summer school work 5. Placement as a volunteer in community service program 6. The level of the course is inappropriate. 7. Individual circumstances supported by student/parent rationale, or the recommendation of an IEP or EPT.
