  3. Physical Needs What are some physical needs of food? Food supplies you with the nutrients you need to survive.

  4. Nutrients: Chemical components of food necessary for the body: • Provides energy • Materials for growth • Regulates chemical processes

  5. Nutrition:The study of nutrients and how they are used in the body.

  6. Wellness What do you think of when you hear the word wellness?

  7. Wellness- a philosophy that encourages people to take responsibility for their own health. Wellness is reflected in both your attitudes and your behaviors.

  8. Wellness decisions that influence your health include the following: • The food choices you make • The amount of physical activity you get • How you manage your feelings and emotions • How you handle certain social situations

  9. Psychological Needs Security Belonging Enjoyment

  10. Security Infants first learn to feel secure when they are fed, cared for and loved. Continuing to have an adequate amount of food to eat helps people build a lasting sense of security.

  11. Belonging • Food is a part of many social events, including weddings and parties. • Certain foods are linked to sporting events • Food makes people feel welcome and at ease. By appeasing hunger, it brings comfort.

  12. Enjoyment • Everyone has favorite foods!

  15. Technology and the Food Supply Suppose you could step into a time machine that would whisk you 300 years into the past. What would your food choices be like?

  16. Technology... Today modern technology has greatly increased the options available to you. Planes and trucks bring food from around the world to Wal-Mart/Kroger, etc.. -Frozen Foods Think about the food advances 300 years from now!

  17. Personal Influences Your Lifestyle- How you spend your life… what is important to you? Values and Priorities- Time/Money Your Emotions- Some people eat certain foods when they are sad or happy.

  18. Food Customs- Unique Foods • Wonton Soup is from China • Shish Kebab is from Middle East • Pita Bread- Middle East

  19. Dietary Laws Hindus do not eat beef because they consider cattle sacred animals. Muslims do not eat pork.

  20. Cultural Etiquette In some cultures, forks, knives and spoons are not used. Chopsticks- China, Japan and Korea Fingers-India, Afghanistan, Algeria, Morocco.

  21. Special Occasions Do any of you have certain foods that you eat on certain occasions?

  22. A World of Food ChoicesIt’s a Small World After All… Food is grown all over the world and flown all over the world. Most developed nations have many different cultures of food at their fingertips.

  23. Food, Science and Technology Food Science- The scientific study of food and its preparation. Ergonomics- The study of ways to make tools and equipment easier and more comfortable to use.

  24. Brainstorm a list of tools and equipment used in the modern kitchen that where unavailable to earlier generations of cooks.

  25. Making Decisions • State the Problem • Options- What are my options or choices • Make a decision • Evaluate

  26. MAGAZINE ACTIVITY Find three food advertisements in magazines. Paste them on a sheet of paper and tell me whether each makes you want to buy the product or not. Explain your reactions.
