  2. Topics • ANGEL License Renewal • Removing inactive users from UW-ACE • General update topics • Growth • Add-on investigation • Infrastructure • Support • Community Groups • Surveys in March

  3. ANGEL License Renewal (1/4) • ANGEL license agreement ends May 2007 • Current license contract information: • 3 year duration (May 2004 – May 2007) • Unlimited servers; “Unlimited” users based on: • 19,000 student FTEs • 21,000 max. users • Costs • Year 1: $50,000 US • Year 2: $57,000 US (~$3.00 per student FTE) • Year 3: $57,000 US

  4. ANGEL License Renewal (2/4) • Changes since current license • Increase in number of students • Professional Dev programs mean co-ops take courses • “Other” uses of UW-ACE growing • New projected numbers for “unlimited” • 22,000 student FTEs • 25,000 max. users

  5. ANGEL License Renewal (3/4) • Issues to raise during negotiations • ALI still a good company to work with, but ... • Support issues as ALI has grown; was “almost excellent” and now “almost good”. • Alternatives to ALI • UW continues to be asked ‘why not Desire2Learn’. • Open source becoming reality (Sakai and Moodle). • ALI knows we will renew. Question is for how long.

  6. ANGEL License Renewal (4/4) • Initial pricing from ALI (~33% increase!): • Year 1 $87,900 (~$3.99 per FTE) • Year 2 $93,200 (~$4.24 per FTE) • Year 3 $98,800 (~$4.49 per FTE) • “Current price list”: • Year 1 $109,000 (~$4.95 per FTE) • Year 2 $122,080 (~$5.50 per FTE) • Year 3 $136,730 (~$6.22 per FTE) • Claim they hold current client increases per year to max. of 10%, compounded. We’re max’ed!

  7. General update topics • Growth • Add-on investigation • Infrastructure • Support • Community Groups • Surveys in March

  8. Removing inactive users • No removals yet (since Fall 2004). • Proposal for general rules: • Instructors – 3 years of inactivity (up from 2 after previous UCIST discussion) • Students – 1 year of inactivity (may adjust to 4 terms to match time we retain courses) • Archives and backups to restore data. • What’s really lost? “My Files” areas.

  9. UW-ACE Growth

  10. “Add on” investigations • Horizon Wimba Voice Tools pilot by DE/IST • Integrated voice tools from 3rd party Wimba • 3 DE German courses (one professor) • Planned demo to Arts Language Lab; some other interest • ANGEL Live pilot by one course (not yet!) • Whiteboard, chat, desktop sharing (ANGEL) • System load concerns; installation issues.

  11. Infrastructure • Withdrawal data – yeah! • Multiple Course List Tool • Local dev to save time in merged roster course support • System timeout • May address web server “crash” issues • Library e-reserves • Need to keep in the loop on upgrades

  12. Support • Still down one LT3 Faculty Liaison (Eng) • Backup for Lorne Connell, the chief architect for UW-ACE systems and infrastructure. • Welcome Dave Hinton from IST’s Computer Systems and Services area.

  13. UW-ACE Community Groups “Other”, non-academic course uses of UW-ACE • Safety Office – Success story! • WHMIS use and cooperative support model a success (Doug Dye and the Safety Office) • Keen to consolidate training into UW-ACE. • CECS’s eManual course • Roster up to 5600 (performance issues). • Need a roster removal plan.

  14. Survey says? • UW-ACE student and faculty survey to be run in March. • Designed by Vivian Schoner and Gail Spencer (LRI/CTE), and Andrea. • Looking for professors to preview the survey in a week or so … Bryan 
