INDUCTION INITIATIVE TEAM Participants: • Associate Superintendent of Schools • Assistant Superintendent • Principal • Participants: • Coordinator of Licensure to Masters • Dean • Coordinator of Administrative Leadership Program Funded by New Teacher Center @ UC Santa Cruz with the support of Carnegie Corporation of New York

Overarching Goal • To create and sustain partnerships that support novice teacher growth and retention, and student achievement. • To develop and enhance instructional coaching skills within the current mentoring framework for new teachers as well as for SOE field students and student teachers to maximize the expertise and feedback of cooperating teachers.

  4. Induction Professional Development Trainings • 2 ½ days workshops • Coaching/Observation Strategies • Analysis of Student Data Trainings • 50 educators • 10% Alverno College – SOE and A & S • 5% Archdiocesan Central Office • 10% Archdiocesan Principals • 75% Teachers – urban, suburban, rural

  5. Archdiocese System of Schools • 119 K-8 elementary schools • 13 high schools • 37,000 students • 10 counties • Rural, Suburban, Urban • Each school/school system is independently operated and site-based, meetings their financial obligations and student service needs at the local level.

Archdiocese seeks to develop a cadre of mentors capable of taking mentor training to the next level.Year 1: Elevating the quality of mentor effectivenessYear 2: Refining instructional coaching and analysis of student workWith the SOE’s recent emphasis on teacher performance and impact on student engagement, trainings will heighten critical review of current field and student teaching observation forms.

Problems/Challenges/Dilemmas • How do we determine congruency between pre-service teacher preparation and novice teacher contextual needs and experiences in order to support and augment teacher standards implementation? • Covering such a wide geographical area, how do we ensure over time that there are mentors throughout the system? Generic training despite diverse settings?

Problems/Challenges/Dilemmas(Cont’d) • How can we track and know if the induction training has impacted and helped retain teachers? • How does the arch connect when there is no arch oversight regarding fiscal and personnel connections? • How to structure data gathering tools to determine needs of diverse demographic areas? • How to structure data gathering tools to determine mentor experience/concerns?

  9. Problems/Challenges/Dilemmas(Cont’d) • The Arch needs time to determine if there is a strong cohort that securely has the basics of mentoring in place to move into the coaching/observation strategies and analysis of student work trainings.
