  1. Can Computers Think? • An Introduction to Artificial Intelligence • Kamal Aboul-Hosn • Cornell University

  2. Is The Matrix Possible? • The technology to control neurons exists • Eventually, we could control the way the mind perceives the world • Artificial organs, limbs, and senses already exist

  3. "Before the next century is over, human beings will no longer be the most intelligent or capable type of entity on the planet. Actually, let me take that back. The truth of that last statement depends on how we define human.” --Ray Kurzweil, The Age of Spiritual Machines

  4. Important Questions • What is real? • What does it mean to think? • Learn and adapt without the aid of others • Perform multiple tasks • Convey knowledge to others • Take knowledge and reason about the world

  5. Important Questions • Is the brain nothing more than a complex computer program? • What does it mean to be human? • If we created a computer that was convincing in claiming it was human, would it be human?

  6. Computer Human Brain Computational units 1 CPU, 108 gates 1011 neurons Storage units 1010 bits RAM, 1012 bits disk 1011 neurons, 1014 synapses Cycle time 10-9 sec 10-3 sec Bandwidth 109 bits/sec 1014 bits/sec Neuron updates / sec 106 1014 Computer vs. the Brain

  7. Computer vs. the Brain • The computer is much faster in raw speed • The brain is much more parallel • Recognizing a face: • Brain: <1 second, few hundred cycles • Computer: billions of cycles, less accurate • Brain is about 1 billion times faster overall

  8. Computers Catching Up? • Biological evolution is a slow process • Human brain has not changed much in the past 5,000 years • Computers have only been around for 150 years!

  9. Where do Computers Fit?

  10. The Current Trend

  11. The Trend Continues...
