Connecticut • Named after Algonquin word “quonehtacut” meaning “long tidal river” • Founded by Thomas Hooker who disagree with Puritan leaders and that Governor William Bradford was too powerful. • He left Mass Bay • He wrote the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut which limited the powers of the governor.

  42. Georgia • Named after King George II • Founded by James Oglethorpe (respected soldier) • 2 reasons • Buffer against Spanish Florida • Prison Reform: people who owed money, debtors, were thrown in jail. In order to create the colony, Oglethorpe paid for their passage to Georgia.
