Declining Nouns • In order to decline a noun in Latin we need to know 3 things about it: • Declension number • Tells us what set of endings that noun will take • Determined by genitive sing. ending • 1st declension = -ae • 2nd declension = -ī • 3rd declension = -is • Noun Stem • Tells us the stem to which we need to add those endings • = genitive singular word – genitive singular ending • Gender • Tells us whether there are any special rules that apply to declining it • Neuter Rule

  15. Identify the steps to declining for the following noun: • Roma, Romaef.: Rome • 1stdeclension takes endings –a, -ae, -ae, -am, ā (sing.), -ae, -ārum, -īs, -ās, -īs (pl.) • Noun stem = Romae - -ae = Rom- • Gender = feminine  no special rules apply
