  1. Bullying Two Students Plead Guilty in Bullying of Teenager Published: May 4, 2011 South Hadley, Massachusetts Definition: Use superior strength or influence to intimidate (someone), typically to force him or her to do what one wants. By: Dzenana Basic and Blake Bentley

  2. Main Points • Two of the six students in South Hadley, Mass., who were charged with bullying (calling names, verbal abuse)a 15-year-old girl before her suicide last year pleaded guilty to misdemeanor harassment charges on Wednesday and received a year’s probation each, plus 100 hours of community service. • The two students who pleaded guilty on Wednesday, Sean Mulveyhill and Kayla Narey, had both faced more serious felony charges, including violation of Ms. Prince’s civil rights and causing bodily injury — in effect, contributing to her death in January 2010 — with a potential sentence of 10 years. Three other former students facing similar charges as youthful offenders are scheduled to appear in juvenile court on Thursday, and it appeared likely that they would receive similar deals.

  3. Our views Blake: I think that these kids should have been punished for the severity of their bullying which caused a girl to commit suicide. I also think that Jail time would have been over the top because they didn’t physically harm her. Dzenana: It was good that they got some sort of punishment for her suicide, I’m happy with the amount of probation they got as well there community service hours. The community service hours should include talking to high school kids about bullying.

  4. Statistics • 90% of 4th through 8th graders report being victims of bullying • 1 out of 20 students has seen a student with a gun at school. • 54% of students said witnessing physical abuse at home can lead to violence in school.

  5. Possible Solutions • Telling an adult • Peer mediation • Standing up for yourself • Never be alone, always have a group of people with you

  6. People effected • Demi Lovato • Christina Auguilera • My sister
