  2. Welcome Back Juniors! • Please do not move any desks! They are exactly where I need them to be.

  3. Welcome Back Juniors! • Please do NOT move any desk. Thank you! The desks are exactly where I need them to be for my 10th graders. • One more semester to go before you are seniors, yeah!

  4. Welcome to English II & English II Honors • Please enter the room quietly and find your seating arrangement from the seating chart. • Take one item from each stack marked “take one” on the front table. Starter: Begin filling out the “student information” form. EVERYONE should be in their assigned seat working quietly when the bell rings.

  5. English II = World Literature • My favorite • Large genre of works • We will be reading: • Novels • Short Stories • Poems • Informational Articles • Speeches

  6. What Will We Reading This Semester?

  7. In addition, Honors will be reading…

  8. Other Important Components in ENG II Students are required to take three Benchmark Exams in preparation for the ENG II EOC. 1st Benchmark = Classwork Grade 2nd Benchmark = Quiz Grade 3rd Benchmark = Test Grade Benchmarks indicate what areas you need to work on in order to pass the EOC.

  9. The English II EOC Exam State exam administered to students at the end of tenth grade. • Reading comprehension questions that are designed to measure multiple components of student learning. • Not curved • High failure rate Many students make the mistake, based on past tests, of relying on the test to pass this class. That will not work in high school English. My former students can attest to this.

  10. Other Class Misconceptions… No, my quizzes and tests are NOT multiple choice. No, you cannot elect to NOT take a test or quiz because you are not ready. Yes, you are expected to bring materials to class everyday – even Fridays! No, I will not give you answers on tests and quizzes Yes, you must make-up work when your absent No, you cannot take quizzes or tests home to make-up Yes, copying another students work is cheating – not helping No, I do not have any candy or food No, I am not an office supply store

  11. About Me I live in Lumberton Born in Ohio “Faith is taking the first step even when you cannot see the whole staircase”. • My Family

  12. Class Guidelines Be in your assigned seat quietlyworking on the bell work when the tardy bell rings. Bring ALL books and materials to class AND take them with you when you leave. Follow directions the FIRST time they are given. Treat each person in this room with dignity and respect. Follow ALL classroom policies and procedures including those outlined in the school’s handbook.

  13. I Do Not Tolerate Disrespect Defining disrespect in this classroom: Engaging in side conversations during lessons Using profanity Talking-over or interrupting someone else Teasing or bullying another student Disruptions or distractions during class Including snarky remarks said under your breath Be Mature! Be Nice!

  14. Special Guideline This classroom is a “No Whining Zone”. That means that there will be no whining, for ANY reason. Everything that I do is in your best interest, so please respect the “No Whining Zone” this semester. No Complaining!

  15. Consequences Each time you violate a guideline or procedure, you will receive a “Guideline Infraction” 1st Infraction • Your name is placed on the board as a visual warning. 2nd Infraction • Checkmark is placed by your name • 30 minute working detention during learning center • Action plan 3rd Infraction • Parental contact • Written referral

Any student who commits a code 2 violation will receive an immediate written referral.

  17. Classroom Procedures Explain, Rehearse, Reinforce!

  18. WHY DO WE HAVE PROCEDURES? • A procedure is the way that we do things. • To do things right, we have to follow some simple procedures, for example: • To open your locker, you have to select your combination as directed by the lock manufacturer. • To place a call on your phone, you need to enter the number in the right order. • So, to be successful in learning, you need to follow some simple procedures.

  19. Entering the room… • Please enter quietly. • Have a seat. • Take out your materials. • Review the agenda. • Starter will be either on the board or overhead • Begin starter assignment • There should not be large bags, book bags, or coats on your desk

  20. When you are tardy… • Enter quietly. • Excused: Place excuse in the basket on my desk. • Unexcused: Sign the tardy log on the front table. • Have a seat and take out your materials.

  21. Getting your attention I will . . . • Stand in front of the class. • Raise my hand. • Wait for everyone to be quiet. • Begin speaking.

  22. When I’m giving directions… Students should not begin until I am finished giving instructions This means: • No moving • No shuffling • No opening books • No talking When I am finished, I will give students the “start prompt” by simply saying “off you go.”

  23. Interruptions and Visitors All guidelines and procedures will remain in force. Students should be on there best behavior during these instances • Office personnel • Teachers • Observers • During phone calls • Substitute teachers

Failure to schedule this conference within a week will result in an Academic Code 2! Assignments must turned in to me • Students will not put them in baskets

  27. Finish Classwork Early? What do I do? • You can: • Work on unfinished English assignments. • Review vocabulary words. • Catch-up on any reading for this class. • Begin working on tonight’s homework. • You cannot: • Use your cell phones to text or surf the web. • Leave this class to run errands. • Sleep • Begin talking with your neighbors.

  28. Paws Reward • Students should enter quietly and take their regular assigned seat! Only those who qualify will be eligible for a Paws pass. • Students who do not qualify: • Will remain in the room for remediation • Will not be allowed to talk or socialize • Will remain seated • Will not be allowed to use electronic devices

  29. Class Dismissal • The teacher dismisses you, not the bell. • Do not start packing up prior to the bell. • Do not get out of your seat and migrate towards the door. I will give you a couple minutes to pack up.
