  1. 4 Different Stages of Gum Disease Gum disease is the leading cause of bacterial infection of the gum tissue. It’s also incredibly common even though it’s highly preventable in most cases. The bacteria that causes gum disease is the same bacteria that causes tooth decay and bad breath. As we said in its earliest stages, gum disease mostly affects the gum tissue itself. As the condition progresses, it can wind up affecting the teeth, the jawbone, and other structures of the mouth. There are four stages of gum disease that increase in severity and invasiveness of treatment as it progresses.

  2. STAGE 1: GINGIVITIS Most of patients with gingivitis may have bad breath and gums that bleed when they are flossed. Flossing is vital to remove bacteria and food debris from between teeth to avoid the infection that comes with gum disease in its later stages. STAGE 2: EARLY PERIODONTITIS If you are not take it seriously and left untreated, simple gingivitis can advance into early periodontal disease. Early periodontitis is finding by inflamed gum tissue that has surrounded the teeth, resulting in early bone loss. In early periodontal disease, patients typically have a gingival pocket depth of between 4-5 millimeters, gums will bleed more readily during flossing and professional cleanings, and your gum tissue will start to recede, creating an aged look. When gum disease begins affecting the bones and infection spreads deeper, professional care is no longer just a recommendation but a necessity. Usually, treatment involves something called scaling and root planning which is essentially a very deep cleaning that removes the hardened plaque that has built up and caused the infection. STAGE 3: MODERATE PERIODONTITIS Most of patients continue to ignore their oral health; early periodontitis can morph into moderate periodontitis, where moderate levels of bone loss can occur. Infected area can create bleeding, pus development, and pain around the teeth. Gum recession can develop teeth sensitivity. When the gums pull away from the teeth, the teeth lose their natural support system and they can become loose. Modern periodontitis patients have gingival pocket depths of between 6 and 7

  3. millimeters. In this stage, oral infections can start leeching into your bloodstream and start causing an inflammatory response throughout your body. To treat moderate periodontitis, experts Do and sanitize the area inside of the gingival pockets. Teeth may become loose and sensitivity may be noticed. There is often pain when chewing if the disease has made it to this stage without treatment. Advanced periodontitis isn’t just a dental issue.
