  1. Response to Intervention

  2. What is RtI? • “Response to Intervention” (RtI) refers to a process that emphasizes how well students respond to changes in instruction. • RtI provides an improved process and structure for school teams in designing, implementing, and evaluating educational interventions.

  3. RtI for Who? • RtIis a framework of thought or a process… • It applies to ALL students at their point of need • (academic or behavioral) throughout their experience in K-12 education. • Therefore, ALL students are part of RtI all of the • time…RtI is a framework that helps us look at • students, instruction, and how students respond to instruction.

  4. Essential Elements of RtI: • Use of universal screening throughout the • school year to identify students in need of • intervention. • Use of scientific, research-based instruction • and interventions in general education • Monitoring and measurement of student • progress in response to the instruction and • Interventions • Use of student progress data to shape • instruction and make educational decisions

  5. RtIand Problem Solving • A collaborative team process involving educators, parents, and students (if appropriate). • Problem solving enables the team to get to the root of the issue that may be hindering successful student achievement, whether it is behavioral or academic or • both.

  6. A Shift in Thinking The central question is not: “What about the students is causing the performance discrepancy?” But rather “What about the interaction of the curriculum, instruction, learners and learning environment should be altered so that the students will learn?”

  7. Benefits of RtI • All students receive help in the general education • setting at their point of need rather than waiting for a • “failure” situation to occur. • Ongoing progress monitoring provides more • instructionally relevant information than traditional • assessments. • Process distinguishes between students with true • learning disabilities versus students who experience • achievement challenges based on other issues.

  8. What Does RtI Provide to Students? • Universal screening (reading and math benchmark • tests) determine overall growth toward Common Core Standards and identify students who are “at-risk”. • Scientifically-based/evidence-based instructional • interventions at student’s point of need. • Ongoing progress monitoring to determine student’s response to the intervention.

  9. RtI Terminology Clarification • Interventions • Available to ALL students • focused on specific, targeted performance deficits identified through scientifically researched based screenings and/or diagnostic assessment • in addition to core instruction • selected through problem-solving approach • effectiveness determined through student progress monitoring data

  10. Examples of Interventions • Research-based learning programs • Research-based teaching strategies such as Charlotte Danielson strategies • Research-based teaching practices such as small group instruction, daily review of key skills, or gradual release model of instruction

  11. Change in Education A new way of viewing student progress… takes time and teamwork to work through the process of change.
