  2. NTRAC Centres (14 of them)

  3. Translational Research Patient Care Clinical Trials Bench Science Drug Development Epidemiology “Fast tracking research for patients”

  4. Aims • To recruit patients into translational cancer research and to support studies and trials by providing: • a trained workforce • an IT infrastructure for data curation and analysis • a resource of DNA and peripheral blood lymphocytes as well as fresh tissue • a core dataset collected as part of recruitment • data linkage with external data sources such as ISD (SMR1,6) or SCAN Audit • a research governance framework

  5. Research Governance / Information Assurance • Informed Consent & Public Trust in Medical Research • Data Protection and Data Sharing • Systems Security • Crossing Organisation Boundaries • Dealing with NHS IM&T • Supporting Informality, Need for Flexibility • Handling high-value, high-volume research data with limited budget and distributed IT infrastructure • Dealing with existing studies, resources and arrangements, e.g. breast unit tissue bank, freezer management systems, lab management systems, SOPs • Managing relationship with other national initiatives, e.g. NCRN electronic remote data capture tool, generic clinical system, …

  6. Lothian Research IT Strategy Group • Bringing together people interested in crossing the boundaries between NHS (LUHD) and Universities (UoE) • Scottish Cancer Research Network (SE) • Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility • NTRAC • LUHD R&D office • And others

  7. Lothian Research IT Strategy Group • Focussing on • networking and the crossing of organisational boundaries • Practical IT implementation problems in this context e.g., Access islands • Linking development on the research side with IM&T development in the NHS • Local group but with a view to link up with similar initiatives nationally

  8. UKCRC • UK Clinical Research Collaboration • All health departments signed up • £150M invested in England with coordinating centre in Leeds • Picture in Scotland emerging now, with Clinical Research Facilities at the centre

  9. Clinical Research Management Platform • Proposal developed by the Research IT Strategy Group • Aiming to support the management (rather than the conduct) of research • E.g., coordinating COREC information between organisations such as R&D offices, research networks, clinical research facilities as well as individual studies • Key building block for the UKCRC in Scotland.

  10. eHealth Portal • One-stop shop for the eHealth Research community to coordinate activities, find information, advertise events, … • Not just a website (passive) but linking in with eMail etc.
