  2. definition • Axis-2, Personality Disorder • According to the DSM-IV: • “The essential feature of Dissociative Identity Disorder is the presence of two or more distinct identities or personality states that recurrently take control of behavior.” • Inability to recall important personal information • Patient usually is not aware of it because they cannot remember themselves alternating personalities

  3. causes • Caused by traumatic episodes • Usually that occur during childhood • Abuse, war, torture, or any form of bad treatment • Often linked with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder • Chronic exposure to stress and stressful situations • DID is more common among close biological relatives of persons who also have the disorder than in the general population
