  4. Background • Why are we doing this? To improve academic achievement • What do we mean by parental involvement? Focus on involvement that will have a direct impact on academic achievement • Iowa City already has substantial parental involvement, why do we need more? Research is clear--increasing parental involvement will increase achievement

  5. Rather than focus on structured schoolwide activities that provide for social interaction between parents, efforts would be better directed to working informally with parents on an individual basis to improve student learning. Carolyn Wanat - Journal for a Just and Caring Education-Oct. 97

Component Two: Survey Survey will focus on parent/teacher relationship • Research indicates that parent/teacher relationship is a key factor in academic achievement • It is not one size fits all -- need to assess as much as possible on an individual basis • Need to avoid telling parents what parental involvement is

  12. Component Two: Survey • Deployed as part of “back to school” night • Data will be aggregated by: School, parents, teachers • Participants will have “call back” opportunities • Data will be used to identify improvement areas

  13. Component Three: Marketing • Needs to build upon NOT replace existing efforts • Send a clear message that answers: Why is the district doing this? What does parental involvement mean? • Need to reach parents and other community members that we don’t typically hear from

  14. Issues/Input What is the Board position on corporate involvement? We would appreciate ideas on how to get meaningful involvement in grades 7-12

  15. Next Steps • Finalize and present theme • Finalize survey and develop deployment plan • Develop marketing plan • Review status at 7/25 Board Meeting
