  1. What areyoulooking at?!? THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM 1.5 9/4/2014

  2. Today’s Warm-up • Muscle Trivia… • How many muscles are in the average adult human body? • What is the strongest muscle in the body? • What is the largest muscle in the body? Approximately 650 Debatable, but many say the masseter (jaw). The gluteus maximus in your rear end (buttocks).

  3. Today’s Warm-up • Here’s one strong dude… • In control of both his skeletal and muscular systems… Amazing Strength BreakDancing

  4. Today’s Objectives • Intro to the muscular system- definitions and functions • Categories of muscle: • Voluntary • Involuntary • Types of muscle: • Skeletal • Smooth • Cardiac • How exactly do muscles work? • BrainPop and/or Video segment

  5. Muscular System • Categories • of Muscles • I. Voluntary • a) Skeletal • II. Involuntary • a) Smooth • b) Cardiac Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Summary of the notes and information learned

  6. Why and What • There are over 600 muscles in the human body! • They are responsible for a variety of functions, including movement & maintaining body temperature. • Even while you sleep there are muscles in your body at work. • There are 2 categories and 3 types of muscle, but all are made of the same material, a type of elastic tissue (a little like a rubber band). • A muscle is defined as an organ that can relax, contract, and provide the force to move your body parts.

  7. Categories of Muscles • Some muscles (skeletal muscles) will not contract unless stimulated by neurons (nerve cells). They are called voluntary muscles. • Other muscles (smooth & cardiac muscles) will contract without nervous stimulation but their contraction can be influenced by the nervous system. They are called involuntary muscles. • The nervous and muscle systems are closely interconnected.

  8. What are muscles made of? • Thousands, or even tens of thousands, of small fibers make up each muscle.

  9. What are muscles made of? • You have three different types of muscles in your body: • skeletal (skeh-luh-tul) muscle • smooth muscle • cardiac (kar-dee-ak) muscle

  10. Skeletal Muscle • Attached to bones; moves skeleton • Also called striated muscle (because of its appearance under the microscope, looks as if it has “stripes”) • Skeletal muscles are voluntary muscle

  11. Skeletal Muscles • Skeletal muscles attached to bones by tendons (connective tissue) and enable movement. Feel the back of your ankle to feel your Achilles tendon- the largest tendon in your body.

  12. What does skeletal muscle look like?

  13. Smooth Muscles • Smooth muscles are involuntary. • They are usually in sheets or layers, with one layered upon another. • It gets its name because no striations “stripes” are visible in them.

  14. What does smooth muscle look like? Look at the layers…

  15. Examples of Involuntary/Smooth Muscles • The smooth muscle controls the movements of internal organs, such as the movement of food through the digestive system. • Many parts of the body contain smooth muscles: the intestines, the lungs, the bladder, and the walls of the blood vessels…

  16. Cardiac Muscle • Muscle of the heart • Involuntarymuscle • Also known as myocardium

  17. How the Heart is Different • How is the heart different from other muscles? • It is part of both the Muscular System and the Circulatory System. • It is responsible for circulating blood throughout the body. • It has its own pacemaker for rhythmic beating.

  18. Looking at all three types of muscles • Striated or Skeletal Muscles are characterized by dark bands (striations). • Smooth Muscles are characterized by layers. • Cardiac Muscles are characterized by a little of both. Voluntary: under your control Involuntary: can work on its own Involuntary: can work on its own

  19. Looking at all three types of muscles

  20. How do muscles work? Remember, muscles can only pull, not push!

  21. Today’s Objectives • Intro to the muscular system- definitions and functions • Categories of muscle: • Voluntary • Involuntary • Types of muscle: • Skeletal • Smooth • Cardiac • How exactly do muscles work? • BrainPop and/or Video segment

  23. Make it a great day Mustangs!
