  2. covenant • An agreement • The Puritans hoped that God would enter into a covenant • If the Puritan colony grew and was successful, the Puritans would conclude that God did indeed favor them as a chosen people

  3. meetinghouse • The town’s largest and most important building • A gathering place for religious services, celebrations, and news

  4. common • A large open pasture • Belonged to everyone • In front of meetinghouse • Families built their homes in town around the common so they could help each other

  5. apprentice • A person working for a skilled worker in order to learn a skill • Spent several years learning skills such as weaving or carpentry apprentice skilled worker

  6. democracy • Rule by the majority • System of government in which the people rule either directly or through elected representatives

  7. dissenter • People who disagreed with the Puritans • They spoke out "The government should not support one religion over another. People should be free to worship as they chose." Roger Williams-minister started the colony of Rhode Island

  8. civil disobedience • Refusal to obey certain laws that one regards as unjust • Form ofprotest • Not harmful • Example: Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a public bus to a white person in the 1950s.

  9. Great Awakening • Puritan religious movement of the early 1700s • Revival of Puritanism • Characterized by an awakening of interest in spiritual matters

  10. merchant • A person whose business is buying and selling goods for profit

  11. Parliament • The lawmaking body of England, consisting of the House of Lords and the House of Commons

  12. duty • A tax paid on goods brought into the country • Example: tea brought to colonies from England

  13. smuggle • To take goods into or out of a country secretly and unlawfully in order to avoid paying a duty
