When, How, What? • Initial comparisons with GOES 11 and GOES 8 during IHOP 2002 – 5 years ago • Collocating GPS IPW and GOES IPW measurements on an hourly basis • Discovered a moist GOES bias, similar between satellites • In-depth look at GOES 12 and 10 historical data (2 years prior to 1/2007) • Applied bias corrections to real time data • Can we correct GOES? • Can we derive some additional information about GOES from the study?

  3. This study was the first to examine GOES water vapor data at asynoptic times. • GOES was typically validated against synoptic RAOB data • We discovered some interesting asynoptic error characteristics that we are still coming to terms with • Have some clues on what might be going on.

  4. The message of this presentation is not so much that GOES has bias error and we can correct the error. It is more important to see that GPS data provided an avenue to gain some valuable insight as to what kind of things were happening to cause the GOES problems. These “things” are being addressed and the upshot will be a more robust GOES retrieval system.

  5. Scatterplot showing the moist bias (compared to GPS) evident in GOES 12. The identical type of curve was seen during the IHOP 2002 experiment with GOES 8 and GOES 11. The moist bias increases with moisture level, dry pairs appear to agree more to the 1:1 line.

The largest differences appear to occur in the afternoon hours (after 16UTC). Minima at synoptic times are believed to occur due to “tuning” the algorithm to synoptic RAOB data.

  7. Here we have the initial (and “only” studied solution) to a bias correction model. Corrected GOES data were derived from the initial GOES data raised to a power (b) and scaled by (a). How does one determine coefficients a and b? One method is least squares (of the log of the correction equation). It has disadvantages. The method chosen was minimization of the GOES and GPS differences. Coefficients were determined by a numerical minimization scheme.

  9. A plot showing the corrected bias values for GOES 12 after applying the correction equations illustrated in the prior slide. Note that after correction we now see a relative “dry” bias in the GOES data in the afternoon hours instead of a higher relative moist bias. However, the magnitude of the bias is several orders of magnitude less than the initial data.

We see not only that the data fall closer to the 1:1 line, but the curvature we saw at the higher moisture amounts has been removed (due to the power term in the correction equation).

GOES 10 (west) data are much drier overall and in initial scatter plots not much curvature was evident. However, in the “b” terms, we see very similar values to those for GOES 12. *required surface data for 00UTC are not yet routinely available for most of the western CONUS

  12. Summary • GOES 12 and 10 display similar error correction coefficients • GOES 10 (not shown) is much drier than 12 since it is out west, but displays a very similar correction algorithm. • Corrections in the afternoon are mostly linear since the “b” term is near unity.

  13. Summary cont. • After working with NESDIS for more than a year and using these correction results, NESDIS retrieval systems are now including a term for IR emissivity correction. • The emissivity correction has not yet been applied to GOES but has been applied to MODIS moisture retrievals; the results are remarkable. • NESDIS believes that emissivity error accounts for the “curvature error” as uncovered by GPS.
