  1. The Mind WHAT SOCIETY CAN DO TO ACCOMMADATE LEARNING DISABILITIES AN INSIDE LOOK ON MILD INTELLECTUAL DISABILTY June 14 2013

  2. The editors thoughts Dear readers, this issue is for those that suffer from M.I.D. this learning disability is not nearly as bad as it can be if it is given the right attention it needs. His disability is really a minor set back because it doesn’t inhibits a persons ability to learn, it only slows the process of the learning. I want this issue of The Mind to inspire you and teach you just some of the issues and factors revolving around M.I.D. I have learned over time that learning disabilities are very common and are not abnormal in todays society. Everyone needs help, may it be a lot or little yours truly, vpeterson

  3. What are the possible causes of M.I.D

  4. Mild Intellectual Disability A person with an intellectual disability may have difficulty learning and managing daily living skills. This is because their cognitive (thought-related) processing is impaired. Children and young people have different abilities and develop at different rates. Some children find learning new skills or information difficult. Although a person may have this learning disability, the have the ability to learn anything, however at a slower rate. Mild intellectual disability is a learning disability that can be caused by any condition that impairs the development of the brain before birth, during birth or in the childhood years. Many causes have been discovered, but in about one third of the people affected, the cause remains unknown.

  5. Forrest Gump Coming soon to a theatre near you A disability cant hold you back, you are the only one that can hold you back…so just run

  6. The following factors have been identified:1. Prenatal: affecting the baby before birth e.g. alcohol and substance abuse by the pregnant mother (there are guidelines available on alcohol intake during pregnancy and mothers should discuss these with their doctors); bleeding during pregnancy and illness or injury of the mother during pregnancy. Recent research has implicated smoking for an increased risk of prematurity.2. Perinatal: affecting the baby at birth e.g. extreme prematurity, low birth weight and brain injury.3. Postnatal: affecting the baby after birth e.g. meningitis, encephalitis, measles, pertussis (whooping cough), head injuries and other traumas to young children.4. Genetic/Inherited causes: e.g. Down Syndrome, the most common genetic condition associated with intellectual disability or Fragile X Syndrome, the most common identifiable inherited cause of intellectual disability.5. Environmental: e.g. cultural deprivation and extreme poverty, which can result in malnutrition, inadequate medical care or environmental hazards.

  7. What can you do to help

  8. Characteristics of a patient if mild intellectual disability. •Learns and processes information more slowly than people without an intellectual disability•Has difficulty with abstract concepts, such as money and time•Has difficulty understanding the subtleties of interpersonal interactions.•Their cognitive development is 2-4 years behind •Clumsy Speech, and motor skills •Poor organizational skills (ie; homework completion, hygiene such as brushing teeth and washing hands,)•Poor basic life skills •lacks self confidence

  9. How we can help to accommodate these students

  10. Teachers can give these students extra time and assistance to give these students understand and complete their work. Teach specific skills whenever necessary. Provide an encouraging, supportive learning environment that will capitalize on student success and self esteem. Use visual information such as pictures, diagrams, signs, objects, gestures or miming to improve understanding. People with this disability learn visually and kinaesthetically. Also try ti use simple sentences with an appropriate tone for the student to understand. try a different way of providing the information or asking the question – the volume if the sentence doesn't make a person understand the words any better, it's the simplicity of the words!! Break down larger concepts into smaller components that can be taught one step at a time. Either teach students in small manageable groups or on one-on-ones so that the group is easier to teach

  11. The family and society Dynamics In many family situations where one family meme we is diagnosed with this disability there is family stress added. The misconception if the illness in one if the family members, constant accommodations for the family member are detached relationshipsdue to the stress increased in the family relationship. There should be a family intervention so that the family members can asses and discuss appropriate ways to handle certain situations. The family dynamic wont be normal and will need to make minor to complex accommodations to help the family member with mild intellectual disability. The society views anything's that's not average as unique or abnormal. Social, political, and economic barriers that exclude families from an acceptable quality of life; stigma and stereotype towards those with a mental illness and their families. Government policies and programs that support and encourage supportive communities and the inclusion of those with a mental illness; ongoing psych education and public programs targeting stigma and stereotypes across the community, including the media. Instead of excluding those that are affected by this disability we should include them and help them as much as we can because we all deserve equal rights and opportunities, so we all deserve help.

  12. nichcy.org is a website that supports patents that have a child or children with a disability. This disability may be physical and intellectual, and minor or major. Nichcy is a national discrimination centre for children with disabilities and this advocacy group will help parents and others affected by disabilities cope with it. The National Benefit Authority is another advocacy group that helps Canadians that face disabilities. They financially help with any money matters that are costly. Advocacy for disabilities

  13. Public concerns One issue is that it is harder for those that live with this disability to receive high paying jobs due to their slow learning ability. There disability holds them back from getting jobs that average beings apply for easily and get the job because they don’t have a disability. Although this s unfair, it is true. And another concern is the mental behaviour and capacity that the public views people that have this disability. They believe that aggression and anger is easily released from those with this disability. The public believes that those with this slow development can become aggressive easily and be dangerous if they aren't given proper attention and care.
