  1. The Road Back By Andrew Keller and Maria Herrera

  2. What is the road back? • Well, generally the Road Back is ¾ into the story. • Often it is accompanied by an event which highlights the importance of the mission. The Hero could also be followed by the vengeful villain, if the hero did not conquer him previously. Often when the vengeful villain is attacking, the assistance of the hero would arrive to aid (but could be killed.) • This step is not necessarily the climax of the story, but this would be the area in which the feeling or direction of the story is changed.

  3. What characters does the hero meet in this phase? • The hero would normally meet assistance or aids as they return. If the villain was not conquered, then the villain will return in attempt to defeat the hero. • What is the “rescue from without?” • A powerful assistance that aids the hero from the final plight, especially at a weakened state.

  4. Why would the hero refuse to go back? • The Hero may find it difficult to return for the hero made success in the special world, thus making it difficult for the hero to think of glory in the ordinary world. • Just like Crossing the Threshold, normally, an event is needed to push the hero back to the ordinary world, such as the vengeful villain, or shadow is lurking and is plotting to attack the ordinary world, etc. These events vary upon genre.

  5. What is he returning to and why? • The hero is to return to the ordinary world once the adventure in the special world has ended. The Road Back is the point in which the hero is resting or at peace. The return is where the journey comes to an end and the hero may bring the “boon” in which will change society in the ordinary world.

  6. Where is the hero returning to? • The Hero is returning to the ordinary world, and to retire from the special world since his adventure is coming to an end. • Special World: The world in which the main adventure is taken place. • Magical Flight: To escape with the “Boon” (treasure.) An item to restore society.

  7. What does the Road Back look like? • As stated earlier, it is the direction-changing point of the story, this is the moment in which the hero and return has a feeling of peace and rest. Once again, depending on the genre, if the villain has not been conquered, they would return to attack the hero.
