  2. Clothing • The Inuit made most of there clothing from caribou skin or sealskin • In the winter and colder weather they wore two suits consisting of mittens, trousers, boots and a hooded jacket • In the summer and warmer weather they wore only one suit.

Language • The Inuit had two related languages. • They were Inuit-Inupiaq and Yupik • The Inuit-Inupiaq was spoken mostly in northern Alaska, Greenland, and southward into the Hudson bay and Labrador coast • The Yupik Language was spoken mostly in far eastern Siberia and some of the Alaskan coast.

Housing & Travel • They had three different types of shelter. • Igloo, Tents, and Sod houses. • In the winter they traveled by sleds pulled by dogs. • In the summer they traveled by Kayak and umiak and they also used them for long trips and to hunt large seal. • The kayaks were made of seal skin or caribou and umiak were made from walrus and seal skins. • They lived in sod houses in the winter and built igloos as temporary shelter when traveling. • They lived in skin tent in the summer.

  6. Culture • The Inuit people were nomadic • Lived in the arctic region of Alaska and northern Canada. • Inuit means “the people” • Lived mostly near the sea.

  7. Religion • The Inuit believed that all animals, things and forces of nature had spirits. • The most important spirit was a goddess that governed the sea. • The believed that if they didn’t follow the rules the spirits might punish them by causing sickness or other misfortunes.

  8. Family Life • Women took care of the children, cleaned sewed and cooked • Men were hinters and fishermen and supported the family • Some men had more then one wife • They could adopt kids • Many marriages were open and divorce and remarriage was common

  9. Historical Background • Historians believe the Inuit are descendants of a nomadic tribe who emerged from western Alaska about 1000 CE • Spread through the arctic
