  2. What does it mean? • A kayak is a small, narrow human-powered boat that’s designed to be manually propelled by a double blade paddle. • Kayak means “hunter’s boat” and it is perfect for hunting on water. • Kayaks are a technology that have a long history of use in the Arctic.

  3. When & Where was it developed? • Kayaks are expected to be around 4,000 years old. • Kayaks have a long history of use in the Arctic • Its was developed by indigenous cultures in Alaska

  4. How was is made ? • The kayak was made of driftwood, skin, bone and sinew. • The kayak was first made by the Native Ainu, Aleut and Eskimo hunters in sub-Arctic regions of the northeastern Asia, North America and Greenland.

How was it used? • The kayak was a very important part in the Inuit lifestyle. • They used the kayaks to hunt on in land lakes, rivers and coastal waters of the Arctic ocean, North Atlantic, Bering Sea and North Pacific oceans. • The kayak was not only used for hunting, they added it into there everyday lives. • It helped them get around to their close relatives from Serbia to Greenland.

  7. Age of the kayak • The first kayak was constructed from stitched seal or other animal skins stretched over a wood or whalebone-skeleton frame. • The oldest existing kayak is exhibited in North America department of the state museum of Ethnology in Munich.
