Often, CC go poorly, not because of content, but because the other person suspects your motive. • This often occurs because the other person assumes something about you.
When this happens… 1. Step out of the content. 2. Create safety. • Step back into the content.
The first step is to establish Mutual Purpose. • This means others believe that we are working toward a common goal and that we care about their interests.
You must be sincere or others will detect your manipulation. • Examine your motives. Ask: 1. What do I want for me? 2. What do I want for other person? 3. What do I want for the relationship?
Journal Topic • Think of someone with whom you need to talk about something very important. What are the key points that you would make to establish Mutual Purpose? • How do you think this person would respond?
ActivityWithin groups, make a list of 10 specific examples of crucial conversations that could be used in class.
