  2. Def. Interoperability , www.whatis.com • is the ability of a system or a product to work with other systems or products without special effort on the part of the customer. Interoperability becomes a quality of increasing importance for information technology products as the concept that "The network is the computer" becomes a reality.

  3. To be interoperabel… • one should actively be engaged in the ongoing process of ensuring that the systems, procedures and culture of an organisation are managed in such a way as to maximise opportunities for exchange and re-use of information, whether internally or externally.

To be interoperabel… • Based upon this definition, it should be clear that there is far more to ensuring interoperability than using compatible softwareand hardware, although that is of course important. • Rather, assurance of effective interoperability will require often radical changes to the ways in which organisations work and, especially, in their attitudes to information.

To be interoperabel… • Across a whole range of ICT-related initiatives, in various countries and multiple domains, new emphasis upon openness, sharing, and access is requiring detailed consideration as to how previously private — and often proprietarily monolithic — systems can be opened up. • More often than not, the term chosen to describe this process is "interoperability", but the meanings implied (they are rarely, if ever, stated) for this term vary quite significantly.

Why interoperability , ex Zone Integration Server? • Rather than have each application vendor try to create a separate connection to every other application, you must define the set of rules and definitions to share data within a Zone. • A Zone is a logical grouping of applications, in which software application agents communicate with each other through a central communication point – the Zone Integration Server (ZIS). • Data is shared between applications through a series of standardized messages, queries and events written in XML and sent using Internet protocols.

Why interoperability , ex ZIS? • These events are defined by a Specification. • Agents are extensions of each application that serve as the intermediary between the software application and the Zone. The ZIS keeps track of the Agents registered in the Zone and manages transactions between Agents, enabling them to provide data and respond to requests.

  9. Why interoperability ex ZIS? • The ZIS is responsible for all access control and routing and security within the system. Because the behavior of the Agents and ZIS are standard functionality can be added to a Zone over time by simply adding enabled applications. • Vertical interoperability is a situation in which agents at different levels of an organization communicate using a Zone. • Vertical interoperability involves data collection from multiple agents (upward) or publishing of information to multiple agents (downward).
