  1. Science of Psychology • Study of human behavior is difficult! • So many variables! • So many behaviors to measure! • So many ethical concerns!

  2. Start with Observations

  3. Hypothesis • It is a guess. • Done with an “If ____ then______” Statement. • “If (something measurable) then (some prediction that is measurable.)” • Example: If I eat only 1200 calories a day, then I will lose 1 pound a week.

  4. Variable • Something that you can measure • In an experiment your goal is to only have one variable! You try to control every thing else.

  5. Independent Variable • The variable that the experimenter is changing. • This is the IF of an IF/THEN Statement

  6. Dependent Variable • The variable that the experimenter is measuring the change of… • It is the THEN statement of the If/Then statement.

  7. For example: • A psychologist asks 3-year old children to explore a playroom either with or without their mothers present. She measures how long they spend exploring in each situation. In this study, the presence or absence of the mother would be what kind of variable? Independent variable! If the mother is present, then__________ (something related to time...) The dependent variable is the time exploring…

  8. At a mall: • Any measurable statement regarding human behavior… Describe what the independent and dependant variables are.

  9. Operational definition This is a statement of procedure It is also a list of measurable variables This is necessary for psychology because operational definitions allow others to replicate our study.

  10. Practice! • Give an operational definition for “I want to measure human intelligence” Score on an standardized intelligence exam. • Give an operational definition for “I want to know which movie is the funniest” Which movie has the most laughs over 10 decibels when viewed by an audience of 50 people.
