Introduction to Partners in Prevention • Partners in Prevention • Coalition of 21 campuses in Missouri dedicated to promoting health and safety at Missouri’s colleges and universities. • Evaluation services of Partners in Prevention • MCHBS: Missouri College Student Health Behavior Survey • MCSVA: First implemented in 2012 • SAMSHA grant: • Federal suicide prevention grant to PIP to address two at risk populations: student veterans and LGBTQ students • Ask Listen Refer: On-line suicide prevention training program http://asklistenrefer.org • Statewide suicide prevention resources http://suicide.missouri.edu • Research Briefs available at http://pip.missouri.edu/research

MCSVA Overview • Purpose: • The Missouri College Student Veteran Assessment (MCSVA) was developed to evaluate engagement, help seeking behaviors, and experiences of student veterans on Missouri’s college and university campuses. • First implemented in October 2012 • 2012, 6 campuses, N = 258 • 2013, 10 campuses, N = 438

Basic Demographics 2013 • 28% Female • 68% were previously a member of the US Armed Services • 63% have been deployed to an area of hazardous duty overseas • 10% have been deployed to an area of hazardous duty within the US • 65% are using the GI Bill to pay for school • Transition from military to academia: • 33% Easy to Very Easy • 29% Neutral • 38% Difficult to Very Difficult

Sense of Belonging • 40% see themselves as a part/member of the campus community • 33% feel a sense of belonging to the campus • 70% can relate to their non-Veteran peers in/outside the classroom • 75% reported feeling welcomed on campus by faculty/staff • 60% reported feeling welcomed by students • 70% are aware of other student veterans on campus

  9. Sense of Belonging • 46% wish they were more connected on campus • 22% have thought about leaving their campus in the past year • 31% feel as if they can’t go to anyone on campus when personal concerns arise • 6% feel as if they can’t go to anyone off campus when personal concerns arise.

Incentives and Funding • Participants will be entered into drawing to win $20 gift certificates • Winners will be drawn from statewide participants, not necessarily school-specific participants • Funding for programs • Up to approximately $1000 in funds per campus. • Funds can be used for veterans-related programming. • Funds should be requested by 6/30/15. • Contact: Dan Reilly, reillyd@missouri.edu • PIP Luncheon Meeting Discussion, in Columbia, MO • Discussion with the general PIP attendees of statewide data • Small group discussion of those working in veterans services • Mileage reimbursed • Data requests (for all three years) • Available at pip.missouri.edu/data.html

Timeline • Timeline of Tasks To Do will be sent out this week (similar to MCHBS set-up) • Decision on participating & identifying campus contact preferred by Sept. 5 • Verify ability to identify Veterans by Sept. 12th • Consent Form Updates by Sept. 19 • IRB Approval/Renewal by Oct. 1 (start early!) • Samples by Oct. 15 • Implement in end of October, beginning of Nov.
