  1. Healthful Living Lesson 7 Disease Prevention and Wellness 1 Mrs. Hannah’s 2nd & 3rd Level Super Stars

  2. Our bodies work hard to fight off diseases that want to make us sick by keeping out germs we come in contact with all day!

  3. Our skin is our first line of defense! It works to keep germs out of our blood and other important parts of our body.

  4. What are germs? Germs are tiny living things that can cause disease. Germs are so small and sneaky that they creep into our bodies without being noticed. In fact, germs are so tiny that you need to use a microscope to see them.

  5. It is very important that we do our part to keep sickness from spreading to others! GeRmS

  6. What can you do? Do not share foods or drinks with others. Germs live on food and can be passed from a sick friend to a healthy one.

  7. Wash your hands, A LOT! Wash hands before eating, after going to the bathroom, after playing with pets, and playing outside.

  8. Stay away from others that you know are sick with illnesses that spread easily like colds and flu. Do not share items that have been in or near someone’s mouth or nose, like drink cans, water bottles, straws, utensils, pencils, and toothbrushes.

  9. Another very important way to stay well is by avoiding contact with body fluids. Use a tissue when you sneeze or cough, or sneeze into your elbow. Then throw away dirty tissues.

  10. Other bodily fluids to avoid are those from the bathroom. Toilets, bathroom door handles, the counters and sinks in the bathroom all carry germs. This is why it is so important to wash your hands after using the bathroom.

  11. Another health concern: Sun Exposure Too much sun hurts your skin, eyes, the tops of your ears and the top of your head. Just a few serious sunburns can increase your chance of skin cancer later in life.

  12. How you can protect yourself from the sun? Wear a hat and sunglasses when you’re outside in the sun. Try to stay out of the sun during the hottest time of the day, especially during summer months.

  13. Use sunscreen whenever it is possible. Use sunscreen even on cloudy days. If you start to feel too hot, seek out a shady spot under a tree or go inside for some water.

  14. End of Lesson 7 Journal Entry: Take notes and look back over them. Write about how you can protect yourself from getting sick and how to protect yourself from the sun. Thanks for another great lesson! I’m so proud of you my super smart Super Stars!
