  7. Cloud Types • Classified based on height • Low • Middle • High • Vertical Development

  8. Classifications (appearance and composition) • Cumulus- cotton balls • Stratus- layered • Cirrus- fibrous, wispy • Nimbus- rain-bearing • Lenticular- lens shaped

  9. Composition • Low Clouds- water droplets, supercooled droplets • Middle Clouds- water, ice crystals, supercooled droplets • High Clouds- ice crystals • Vertical Development- contain all types

  10. Clouds with Vertical Development • Indicate an unstable atmosphere • Can produce lightning, hail, tornadoes, gusty winds, and wind shear • Very turbulent • Extremely hazardous

  11. Closing • Clouds can indicate imminent weather conditions and must be considered before every flight. • Clouds with vertical development are the most hazardous and produce intense weather phenomena. • Any Questions??
