  2. Different types of nouns... • A noun is the part of speech used to describe a person, place, thing, quality, or action. • The types of nouns we are going to look at are: common vs. proper and concrete vs. abstract

  3. Common Nouns coffee shop jeans country teacher school Proper Nouns Starbucks Levi’s America Mrs. Johnson E.T. Booth Middle School Common vs. Proper Nouns Common noun = names a general item; does not require capitalization Proper noun = names specific item; requires capitalization *Exception* = remember common nouns can be capitalized at the beginning of a sentence!

  4. Examples: * Identify the ONE common noun that DESCRIBES the proper noun!! • I have a friendly dog named Jake. Common noun =dog Propernoun =Jake • We visited the country of Italy. Common noun =country Propernoun =Italy

  5. Concrete or Abstract?? • A concrete noun is a noun that describes a material or tangible object. This is something you can physically touch. • An abstract noun is a noun that describes an intangible concept such as love or envy. These are nouns that you can not physically touch.
