  1. Directory of Shared Practice

  2. Background The Coaching Network has aimed to share effective practice with individuals, teams, and wider staff… Discreet coaching programmes with individual staff, twilight CPD, targeted sessions on inset days.

  3. Background Guidance identifying, and demonstrating, the very best that staff have to offer across the school. From the Teaching and Learning Newsletter… …to the annual Good to Outstanding sessions. Most valuable experience can be observing as wide a variety of lessons as possible.

  4. What is the purpose of the Directory of Shared Practice? Create new opportunities for staff to move on from the formal observation. Support staff in gaining a wider experience of observation. Directory aims to identify where our in-house expertise lies. Encourage professional dialogue. Create professional development opportunities that can be pursued routinely, informally, and independently of management structures. Sharing expertise… confined by subject team, or confined by word of mouth.

  5. How should the Directory of Shared Practice be used? An initial conversation between CTLs and team members as part of the Appraisal process. The primary purpose is for staff to use in ways that help them to develop. Professional dialogue does not have to be confined to one annual meeting, or with one member of staff.

  6. How should the Directory of Shared Practice be used? Sections and elements of lessons. Part of a lesson, and not necessarily the entire lesson. A ‘learning walk’ which focuses on a particular element of practice across a number of lessons. Reasonable notice, and negotiation, with staff.

  7. How should the Directory of Shared Practice be used? Two observations a year. No upper limit. To form part of the discussion in Appraisal planning and review meetings, to help identify next steps. Staff can continue to invest in their own development.

  8. Using the Directory to target particular elements of teaching Provides an overview of the range of different subject. Staff can target key elements of teaching across the curriculum. Provide some starting points.

  9. Using the Directory to target particular elements of teaching A simple tick is marked for planning. No description since planning models are available as part of the Good to Outstanding CPD programme. Also available on the VLE. The Directory will include all Mill Lane staff as the year progresses. NQTs do not feature, as they are part of a separate observation programme. They are encouraged to use the Directory. The aim will be to include TAs in the Directory next year. Each teacher is identified for two things that they do well. The elements of teaching match those in the observation cycle. There will be overlap, but for clarity two obvious elements have been identified.

  10. How should the Directory of Shared Practice be used? Two simple sheets have been designed to help discussion after observations, or within Appraisal discussion. These sheets are not for making judgements. Aims: to help staff to capture thoughts and reflections about what was interesting, useful, new etc., to help staff consider how they might take forward aspects of learning observed into their own practice. One sheet for observation of a lesson, or part of a lesson. Another for staff to carry out a learning walk.

  11. How will the use of the Directory of Shared Practice be supported? Cover will be provided.

  12. This is only a starting point, and so ‘version 1’. Aspects will need review. Staff involvement will be crucial to maximising use of the Directory for everybody.
