  4. The e/ Trigger at USC-55 II Calorimeter Trigger Status and GCT: • 12 RCT crates already there when we started. • 33% of the rear region RCT electronics also there. • GCT Connected in RCT 10,11 • Followed by RCT 14, 15 with aim to see cosmic rays. • 4 RCT Crates have all signals connected which includes the Jets. • First signals in June ?? • Try for Cosmics ?? Trigger Meeting 22/05/067 C. Foudas - Imperial 4 • Following N

  5. The e/ Trigger at USC-55 II Connections with 2 RCT Crates have been established !! Data read from ECAL and HCAL TPGs !! Source Card System: • 36 Source cards have been produced and tested. • 31 Source Cards have been installed in 6 Crates at USC-55: - These are enough for the electron trigger and 13/45 of the Jet Trigger. - Currently under use performing RCT<->GCT data transfer stress tests. • The Optical Patch Panel and all 12m data Fibres have been installed • 2 Rack PCs for the USB readout and pattern test have been installed • The last production of 36 more Source Cards is under way. Upstairs Trigger Meeting 22/05/067 C. Foudas - Imperial 5 • Following N

  6. Optical Patch Panel GCT Crate with: 1 Concentrator 1 Leaf 1 VME Controller Global Trigger GCT Optical Patch Panel The e/ Trigger at USC-55 III Downstairs Main GCT System: • The main GCT crate has been installed in its position. - One Concentrator Card + VME Controller. - One Electron Leaf Card (capable of triggering half the Calorimeter) • Reliable communications with the GT has now been established: - Five out of Seven GCTGT Links (2 Electron and 3 Jet) were tested successfully for BER<10-14 . - Last Integration Milestone has now been passed. - It looks very likely now that this system will work. Hence, reduced risk. Trigger Meeting 22/05/067 C. Foudas - Imperial 6

  7. RCT Crate 11 (1-18) Source Card Crate 5 (0-5) GCT-USB-2 Readout RCT-GCT Data Integrity Tests Pamela, Andrew, Alex, Costas • Patterns were sent successfully from RCT Crate 11 to GCT Crate 5 (with Re-Synch). The tests demonstrated: • Correct data transfers from GCT to RCT via the final 80 MHz 3m Cables (read via USB). • That the integration test from summer 06 can now be reproduced in-situ with the final version of hardware and firmware. • Readiness to try the next test and receive synchronously data from HCAL TPGs TTC Fibre Trigger Meeting 22/05/067 C. Foudas - Imperial 7

  8. HCAL-RCT-GCT Synchronization Test HCAL TPG RCT Crate 11 (1-18) Source Card Crate 5 (0-5) • One simple pattern was transmitted many times successfully from HCAL via RCT to GCT. • The data was captured on BC0 as it would be during data taking. • Both synchronization and correct data transfer were tested successfully. • However, this was just the beginning… • MORE TESTS TO FOLLOW GCT-USB-2 Readout TTC Fibre fan-out GCT-USB Readout 2 RCT ECL Cables carrying Isolated and Non-Isolated Electron information from RCT 10 Dick, Pamela, Andrew, Alex, Costas Optical Electron Data to GCT Downstairs Trigger Meeting 22/05/067 C. Foudas - Imperial 8

  9. ECAL RCT Crate 10 (1-18) Source Card Crate 4 (0-5) GCT-USB-2 Readout ECAL-RCT-GCT Synchronization Test in Progress Pascal, Joao, Pamela, Andrew, Alex, Costas • A similar test as the one with HCAL is being setup with the ECAL group (Pascal, Joao). • Note that this test is taking place in a different pair of RCT-GCT crates. • Counter data received correctly most of the time…. • Spurious errors 1/7000 orbits We may now know the cause of this... • Andrew has changed the firmware and tested it at Imperial with the RCT emulator. • Major limitation in these tests are infrastructure problems (power cooling and so on…) Pacal, Joao, Pamela, Andrew, Alex, Costas Trigger Meeting 22/05/067 C. Foudas - Imperial 9

  10. GCT Optical Patch Panel GCT GT Source Card-GCT-GT Tests • Patterns were send correctly form the GCT Source Card in Crate 4 via three 12 m fibres down one floor to the main GCT crate. The data integrity was tested both by looking at the data and by checking the CRC and was found to be working. Need to reproduce the BER = 10-13 we had at the lab also at USC-55. • GOOD NEWS: 5 out of 7 GCT to GT links tested to BER = 10-14 (This is a first time ever). If the power/cooling had stayed up longer we would have been able to push this limit even lower. • Obviously will continue testing the five remaining links. Trigger Meeting 22/05/067 C. Foudas - Imperial 10

  11. Goal for Next week • Test once more all individual steps again to our satisfaction… • Put everything together and see of we can transfer data all the way to GT. ECAL/ HCAL RCT Crate 10 (1-18) Source Card Crate 4 (0-5) GCT-USB-2 Readout 12 m Fibre to Lower floor Global Trigger GCT : Leaf + Concentrator Cards L1-ACCEPT Trigger Meeting 22/05/067 C. Foudas - Imperial 11

  12. First Conclusions • Provided that the conditions in USC-55 improve we could do the following in June 07: • Send more sophisticated patters from ECAL/HCAL to GCT and GT (single electrons or energy depositions of various energies and angles) • Load the Source Cards with Real MC events (Pascal can do this too I think) and see what comes out on GT • The trigger chain needs to be tested before detector data is available for BER<10-13(~0.3 errors/link/day not that impressive) • Will need the emulator software working well to do this. • Need to discuss with HCAL/ECAL to coordinate for CR in June. Trigger Meeting 22/05/067 C. Foudas - Imperial 12

  13. Jet Trigger Progress • Production for all the Leaf Cards is in progress (they are in assembly) with the first 2 cards (preproduction) to arrive at CERN in June 07. • The rest of the Source Cards should be arriving at Imperial towards the end of May 07 to be used for the Jet Trigger. • The manufacturer has managed to repair two design mistakes in the Concentrator CardPCB. Hence, no second iteration PCB is needed for the Concentrator. • A second Concentrator Card has been delivered at CERN and is been prepared to be used for assembling the Jet Trigger this summer. • A Jet setup is ready at the LAB ready to test the Wheel card - 9U VME Crate and Controller + TTC system - Second Concentrator - Second Leaf Card • First Version of the Wheel Firmware Ready. Trigger Meeting 22/05/067 C. Foudas - Imperial 13

  14. Wheel Card • Bad news: The Wheel Card came back with the 2.5, 3.3 Volts and Ground shorted together. • The problem was traced to a Layout mistake which in retrospect was trivial but CERN Layout did not have the proper software to detect it. • The Card is a total loss. • The question now is what measures to take to prevent this from happening in the next production. • A meeting has been setup with CENR layout on Thursday to discuss measures. • This will cause about 1-2 Months delay to the Jet Schedule which means that we will not be testing the Jet Trigger until August 07 with installation going to September 07 if all goes well from now on. Trigger Meeting 22/05/067 C. Foudas - Imperial 14

  15. Summary and Outlook Summary: • The Electron Trigger is in USC-55 under test. • With the GT tests done we do have now a proof of principle for the GCT design and the overall risks have been reduced. • As soon as the calorimeters are connected to the electronics we will be able to trigger the experiment. • However, as we have seen with the Wheel…bad things can still happen. Goals for Summer 2007: • Complete all the planned Pattern Tests at USC-55. • Prepare to run with Comics early in summer 07. • Produce the rest of the Jet Hardware (Leafs+Wheel) and test them. • Test the Jet Trigger in the Lab.
