Effects of HIB • Substantially disrupted or interfered with orderly operation of school rights of other students • Offender knew action would physically or emotionally cause harm to the victim or damage to the victim’s property • Victim was in fear of physical or emotional harm or damage to personal property • Insulted or demeaned a student or a group of students • Interfered with victim’s education • Created a hostile educational environment by severely or pervasively causing physical or emotional harm to the student

On a positive note...Social/Emotional AND Culture and Climate School Programs • PBSIS (Positive Behavior Supports in Schools)/Student Centered Climate and Culture – program focuses on catching students doing the RIGHT thing and giving an instant reward during monthly held assemblies • MOSAIC Program (Mastering Our Skills and Inspiring Character)- This approach includes a 3 year curriculum to build students’ social-emotional skills and virtues, create opportunities for youth voice in schools, and promote a respectful and caring school climate • The NED Program – School-wide character education program which centers around an assembly which opens the door for teachers to access resources such as lesson plans, videos and classroom activities centered upon improving student behavior, strengthening test scores, enriching instructional time and increasing academic achievement

On a positive note...Social/Emotional AND Culture and Climate School Programs • School Wide Student Councils – empowers students to promote leadership and scholarship in their respective schools • CIA (Caballeros in Action) – middle school boys’ empowerment group • Breakfast with Cops – Jersey City Police Officers meet with students in a relaxed setting • G.E.M.S. (Girls Empowering Minds and Spirits) – weekly support group for middle school girls whose goal is to inspire, educate and encourage to make healthy choices. They also practice peer mediation to think aloud and offer assistance to each other • Week of Respect – During the Month of October, various activities and assemblies are held throughout the district to promote respect and kindness

  16. On a positive note...Social/Emotional AND Culture and Climate School Programs • G.I.R.L.S. (Girls in Real Life Situations) – empowerment group for 5th grade girls to assist them in making positive choices and decision making • Montclair University Theatre on the Move – “Breaking the Cycle” of Bullying. College students address issues of Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying through a series of on stage vignettes, which conclude with a question and answer period • EVERFI.com Character Education Program – a grant partnership with the NY Jets, assists students with an online program on character • R.A.C.E. (Respect, Acceptance, Caring and Empathy) Monthly Program which includes parents

On a positive note...Social/Emotional AND Culture and Climate School Programs • Peer Mediation Programs- Students are trained to assist in diffusion of negative situations in schools and promote a healthy school culture • STEM group – Intro to civil engineering for grade 5 students, who not only learn about bridge building but also about how to work together, and help each other solve problems • Student of the Month- Students who have demonstrated improvement in academics/character are honored at a gathering • Teacher/Student Mentoring Program (Grammar level)/Advisory Period (High School level)– meets weekly to assist with HW/schoolwork, talk and discuss and any other guidance a student may need. • The HS program meets 4x per week and emphasizes the development of personal connections between advisors and advisees so students get individualized support, called “Distributive counseling” they require to navigate through HS

On a positive note...Social/Emotional AND Culture and Climate School Programs • SECD groups (Social Emotional Character Development) – small groups of students from Grades 3-7 who work on social and emotional issues • HS Social Emotional Programs –B Bold B Urself – student organization that promotes pride and acceptance. Seminars are held on topics that help students grapple with a range of issues from diversity to stress and brings students from various middle and high schools together in the annual B Bold B Urself Summit • Dynamic Mindfulness – Renaissance/Weekly Social Emotional Program which uses transformative life skills using evidence based lessons in stress resilience, self-awareness, emotional regulation and healthy relationships. Students identify stress, what causes it, and breathing techniques which helps control it

  19. On a positive note...Social/Emotional AND Culture and Climate School Programs • Info Lunch Program (DHS) – Local non-profit vendors distribute information and talk to students directly to connect them to services in the community. They learn to advocate for themselves on a number of home/school issues and offer the students a personal support system within the building with a feeling of community assistance • Tigers’ Den/ at Snyder HS – Safe haven for students who are in need of counseling and other support services • Inter-Agency Task Force – a cadre of social emotional agencies who assist our students and parents as needed through the diligence of our District Service Brokers

On a positive note...Social/Emotional AND Culture and Climate School Programs • Home Instruction Service – support programs offered through the Student Life and Service Dept., helps students transition not only from severe medical situations but also from alternative settings to assist them in getting themselves back to normalcy in school • Attendance Courts – parents and students are given options to assist them in overcoming obstacles of chronic absenteeism and truancy • City Wide Student Council – Students from middle and high schools throughout the District meet monthly to discuss school issues and use this venue as a support system for each other

On a positive note...Speaker Series: Middle and High School • Dennis Febo – “Guazabara Insights” – Social Emotional Curriculum, Violence Prevention, Self-Awareness, Cultural Awareness and Community Cohesion • YusefChavers “Love Life” – Violence Prevention, Substance Use, Healthy Choices and Decisions, Conflict Resolution • Aaron Muhammad “Elevated Places” – Self-Empowerment, Motivation, Preparing for Success and Conflict Resolution • CAP Program (NJ Child Assault Prevention - Grammar level) – statewide effort grant to strengthen families by empowering children to be “Safe, Strong and Free” through classroom and parent workshops • Raymond Ruiz, District SAC – “Substance Abuse Assemblies” to grades 4-12

On a positive note...Speaker Series: Middle and High School • EleniThrodorau “Noko the Knight” – Empowering Kids to Embrace Their Emotions Effectively • Cyberbullying/Sexting Presentations – Hudson County Prosecutors’ Office • Joetta Clark-Diggs – former Olympian who has visited many district schools teaching behavior modification to students • Harlem Magic Masters – Curtis “Tiny” Johnson – in a relaxed basketball setting, positive messages are spread to students such as anti-bullying, inclusion and respect
