College of Science and Engineering • Assumptions to develop models: • Colleges can have departments and schools but schools cannot have departments • If we remain with a department model, we will have fewer and larger departments. • Schools will have a full-time director. Departments will have a chair. College of Science and Engineering Timeline and Next Steps Aug. 17, 2010: Provost Malhotra presents initial models to campus based on recommendations from Strategic Planning Committee Aug 19 to 23 2010: College meetings. Departments and faculty submit comment to Dean relative to Dean’s program appraisal report to Provost. Aug. 23, 2010: Deans submit revised SPA Phase II recommendations Aug. 30, 2010: Provost shares SPA Phase II recommendations with campus community Sept. 3, 2010: Academic support and administrative services appraisal process and timeline finalized* Sept. 8 & 9, 2010: SPA Open Forums Sept. 10, 2010: Rough cost estimates for presented models completed Sept. 16, 2010: Strategic Planning Committee submits SPA recommendations to Provost Sept. 24, 2010: Strategic Planning Committee finalizes process for gathering and consolidating input related to proposed reorganization models* Nov. 19, 2010: Provost Malhotra makes final organizational model recommendation to President Potter Dec. 3, 2010: President Potter makes final decision Jan. 18, 2011: Reorganization implementation and transition plan, process and timeline shared with campus * Additional timeline detail will be provided to the campus based on the work of the Strategic Planning Committee and the Academic and Academic Support and Administrative Appraisal Steering Groups

College of Science and Engineering • The following are conversation starters, there may be many other questions and these will be collected during the course of discussions that will take place through the fall and beyond. • How does each model address the outcomes of: • improving organizational connectedness • facilitating inter- and multidisciplinary work and innovation • embedding flexibility and feedback loops into the system and structures • decreasing administrative overhead • Are we best served administratively by a 3, 4, or 5-college model? • What are the implications of these different models on the supervisory and evaluative functions? • Should degree programs be • housed within institutes • and centers? • Should rostering occur • within institutes & centers? • What is the appropriate • administrative oversight • for institutes and centers?
