  2. This webinar covers;- The Higher Education Academy The UK Professional Standards Framework for HE Applying for Professional Recognition

The Higher Education Academy • Provides support to the UK higher education sector • including HE in FE and the independent sector • around the student learning experience • Has a range of central services including • professional recognition, accreditation of HEI • programme and CPD schemes against the UK PSF • Has 24 subject centres offering resources and • professional support to subject groupings • Organisational focus currently under review

  4. UK PSF The UK PSF is a framework for standards, not a framework of standards

The UK PSF • Simple and flexible with a variety of uses • Enables all staff who deliver HE level learning to locate themselves in the framework • Recognises different levels of experience and contribution • Offers recognition as Associate, Fellow or Senior Fellow of the HEA • Tool for institutional staff development • Currently under review

  6. The HEA’s Professional Recognition Scheme is aligned with the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education (UK PSF).

The Framework:- • Sector-owned following a • consultation • Recognises the distinctive nature of learning and teaching in HE • Acknowledges the sector’s maturity and autonomy in quality enhancement • Emphasises:- • Scholarly activity • Subject inquiry • Knowledge creation • An enabling mechanism

  10. 3 Levels of Professional recognition Through the Academy's Professional Recognition scheme you can become an Associate, Fellow or Senior Fellow of the Academy. Currently 367 from the HE in FE community This is a portable asset that gives public recognition of your expertise and commitment to the student learning experience.

  11. 3 Levels of Professional recognition The Professional Recognition Scheme: confers post nominal letters.. • Associate of the Higher Education Academy (AHEA) • Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) • Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA)

  12. 6 Areas of activity Areas of activity 1. Design and planning of learning activities and/or programmes of study 2. Teaching and/or supporting student learning 3. Assessment and giving feedback to learners 4. Developing effective environments and student support and guidance 5. Integration of scholarship, research and professional activities with teaching and supporting learning 6. Evaluation of practice and continuing professional development

  14. AHEA Associate status is closely aligned to Standard Descriptor 1 (SD1) of the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education (UK PSF). New to teaching; have a limited role; practice based or clinical job; limited assessment function.

  15. SD1: Associate of HEA • ‘Demonstrates an understanding of the student learning experience through engagement with at least two of the six areas of activity, -ie- one area from 1-4 and area 5, plus appropriate core knowledge and professional values

  17. FHEA Fellow status is closely aligned to Standard Descriptor 2 (SD2) of the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education (UK PSF). Practice role – more experienced HE teachers, possibly including ‘qualified HE teachers’ via Cert Ed, PGCE, Programme Managers

SD2: FHEA ‘Demonstrates an understanding of the student learning experience through engagement with all areas of activity, core knowledge and professional values; the ability to engage in practices related to all areas of activity; the ability to incorporate research, scholarship and/or professional practice into those activities’

  20. SFHEA Senior Fellows are outstanding champions of teaching and learning, and act as change agents at national and international level. Senior Fellowship criteria are referenced to Standard Descriptor 3 (SD3) of the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and learning in higher education (UK PSF). Senior Fellow status is conferred by the Senior Fellowship Committee 

  21. SFHEA Senior Fellows are outstanding champions of teaching and learning, and act as change agents at national and international level. Senior Fellowship criteria are referenced to Standard Descriptor 3 (SD3) of the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and learning in higher education (UK PSF). Senior Fellow status is conferred by the Senior Fellowship Committee

  24. Recognition • Two referees needed • Area 5 is interpreted flexibly • Each area has short guidance section • Recognition panels made up of peers • One-off £50 fee
