  2. Social media Social media allow members to create multiple connections to others, communicate with other people and easily create and share information. A specific sub-group of social media are called social networking tools. These tools allow people to: Create profiles, Find other people with similar interests; and Interact.

Social networking services can be useful for your work • They will not provide a unique solution to all of your communication needs, and the use of all tools requires a careful evaluation of the purpose and practicality of using them at all. • By learning how these services work, you can start thinking about strategic uses in your organization or project.

  4. Common features of Social Media • Connecting to other users • Video and image posting • Email, message boards and messaging • Group, Events and Causes

Strategic use of social Networks Your organization or working group may use social networking sites for a variety of objectives: • To publish your own news; • To communicate with people in other continents;  • To raise funds for a campaign; • To find local volunteers; and many others.  Note: • It is important to be clear about what you want to achieve, and then evaluate if a social networking site can help you achieve those objectives: not all of them can help you achieve the same results.

Privacy and information sharing • Most social networking sites profit from their members’ profile information. • Your personal data is valuable to social networking sites because it constitutes the base of their business model, allowing advertisers to use this information to direct messages to specific groups of potential consumers. • Every social networking site has a User Service Agreement, a basic contract between the user and the company or organization who provides the service. Facebook specifically prohibits its members from creating false identities or maintaining multiple identities on the site. • It is your responsibility as a user to make sure you know the conditions under which you are making your information available. • Think about what you want to make public, and what is better kept private.
