It is what everyone displays every day It is what every team has from the first time it meets It is the way a person (or group) walks, talks, dresses, thinks in general presents himself/herself Why is it scored? It is a teams style that makes problem solution unique It is a teams style that demonstrates its creative thinking outside the problem constraints It is a teams style that ties all the elements for a problem solution together.

    13. What kids learn from Odyssey Teamwork Effective of use of materials and tools Breaking down a bigger problem into smaller components and then solving it piece by piece Creation of a skit - artistry/performance Relevance of Costumes / Props in a Performance Time Management - Learning time efficiency Adjust with open-ended problems creatively Money Management - Budgeting money (e.g., cost limit for solution)

    17. Spontaneous Problem Solving This part of the competition is called "Spontaneous" because teams don't know what they'll have to do until they enter the competition room. Solving spontaneous problems teaches students to "think on their feet." There can be Three types of Spontanous Problems Hands-on Requires team to physically create a tangible solution Verbal Require verbal responses. They may incorporate improvisation or dramatization Requires good English verbal skills including use of idioms with fast, clear speech Verbal/hands-on Require teams to create a tangible solution and include some type of verbal component, for example, creating a story about the solution. ONLY FIVE team members will participate in SPONT FINAL Style goes before thisStyle goes before this

    18. Spontaneous Examples HandsOn Build a tall structure with Straws and Playdoh until it collapses Verbal Name any words or phrases that use or contain the letters "ice". Ex. Ice man, Icing, Ice Hockey etc Name things that stick to other things, what they stick to, and the result. Ex. 19. Outside Assistance Rule Team gets a penalty for ANY outside help from parents or anyone else No suggesting solutions; Just guide by asking very general questions No doing any of the work for the kids, even if it involves tools that are beyond their capability (just have them go back and choose a different solution) No fixing things at home, or competition site Teams should not start problem solution until the membership is solid
