  2. Overview • Purpose and Importance of Instruction Mode • September 2013 Updates • Coding Procedure • Specific Fall 2013 Examples • Feedback on Job Aid Instruction Mode

  3. Purpose and Importance of Instruction Mode • Federal and State Reporting • IPEDS, HLC, ICHE, Federal Title IV (financial aid), U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs, U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security • Potential for loss of accreditation and financial aid penalties (IU and student) • Bursar Billing of Tuition and Fees • Fair and accurate billing • IUOCC – Online Class Connect • SIS – Student Class Expectations Instruction Mode

  4. September 2013 Updates • Coding inconsistencies for Fall 2013 – lack of shared understanding of “online” • Define “online” and “online %” (not defined in original document) • “Online All” – students cannot be bound by time or place • Exceptions that don’t “fit” into original codes • Synchronous distance video (DO)– not “online” but still “distance” by definition • Hybrids special case (HD) – combined classroom/synchronous video – also “distance” Instruction Mode

  5. Coding Procedure Instruction Mode

  6. Coding Procedure • Determine Online %: • Find “total sessions” = # of class meetings/contact hours • Find “# online sessions” = # of class meetings/contact hours that are no longer held on campus because the instruction has been designed and delivered online, often through a course management system such as Oncourse. • “Online %” = “# online sessions” / “total sessions” • Use Flowchart and/or Percentage Chart • Latest Job Aid Available at IUOnline About Us  Archives: http://iuonline.iu.edu/about/archives.shtml Instruction Mode

  7. Coding Procedure Online % Example A: • Class “A “ meets once per week for a full semester, plus a final exam, which is 16 “total sessions” needed to meet the course requirements for contact hours. The instructor requires the students to meet on campus for the first week, midterm week, and finals week. The remaining sessions have been designed in Oncourse, making 13 “online sessions”. The online percentage is 13/16 = 81%. When you apply this percentage in the Job Aid flowchart, the course is coded as OI – Online Interactive. Instruction Mode

  8. Coding Procedure Online % Example B: • Class “B” meets twice per week for a full semester, plus a final exam, which is 31 “total sessions” needed to meet the course requirements. Each week, one class meeting is held in the classroom, but the other class meeting materials (including the final) have been designed in Oncourse, making 16 “online sessions”. The online percentage is 16/31 = 52%. When you apply this percentage in the Job Aid flowchart, the course is coded as HY – Hybrid, Traditional. Instruction Mode

  9. Fall 2013 Examples • All examples shown are from actual Fall 2013 class listings at various IU campuses. • Class Notes compared to Instruction Mode demonstrate a need for more clarity and communication. • All examples are available as a survey monkey “quiz”, complete with full explanations, at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/OOEInstructionModeQuiz Instruction Mode

  10. Fall 2013 Example 1 Current code = “OI” Days & Times: MoWe 4:15PM - 5:30PM Room: ARR Class Notes: Distance delivered via video conference from IU Southeast. Correct Code: “DO” This class uses synchronous video. The instructor is located at IUS, the students are at IUSB. The class is taught in real time. Instruction Mode

  11. Fall 2013 Example 2 Current Code = OI, similar sections = HY, CT Days & Times: Tu 5:30PM - 8:00PM Room: Center Hall A500 Class Notes: Class sessions will be presented via Broadcast, Online, and face-to-face. Broadcast sessions are: Sept 24; Oct 1, 8, 22, 29; Nov 5, 19; Dec 3 Internet sessions are Oct 15; Nov 12, 26; Dec 10 Final exam: week of Dec 16 via internet Correct Code: “HD” 5/16 sessions online = 31% Online Remaining sessions are synchronous video broadcast Instruction Mode

  12. Fall 2013 Example 3 Current Code = “OA” Days & Times: ARR Room: ARR Class Notes: Above class will be taught on the World Wide Web and will have face-to-face meetings. Correct Code: “OI” or “HY” The number of face to face meetings is needed in order to determine correct code. Instruction Mode

  13. Fall 2013 Example 4 Current Code = “OA” Days & Times: TuTh 3:15PM - 4:30PM Room: Wright 2222 Class Notes: Department offers the following course via the Virtual Indiana Classroom (VIC) and Indiana Higher Education Telecommunication Systems (IHETS). VIC and IHETS provide live, interactive television. To participate in this course, students must attend a local receive site. Correct Code: “DO” Students must come to campus to attend this class. The instructor and student are separated by distance, but this is not considered an online class. Instruction Mode

  14. Fall 2013 Example 5 Current Code = “OA” Days & Times: ARR Room: Web-based Class (WB) WEB Class Notes: This class will require 4 face-to-face sessions, four (4) Fridays. Dates/times: 9/13, 10/4, 11/1, and 11/29. Correct Code: “OI” or “HY” If this class only meets once per week, then 11/16 = 69% online, for an “HY” designation. If the class meets twice per week, then 27/31 = 87%, or “OI”. Instruction Mode

  15. Fall 2013 Example 6 Current Code = “HY” Days & Times: ARR Room: ARR Class Notes: Online, ten week course. Mandatory orientation meeting 8/28 or 8/29 in EP 220, 7-8 pm. Evening exam 10/29, 30, or 31, Room TBA. Correct Code: “OI” As a 10-week class that meets 2 weeks in the classroom, that’s 8/10 online sessions, or 80% online. Instruction Mode

  16. Fall 2013 Example 7 Current Code = “HY” Days & Times: We 10:00AM - 1:00PM Room: Off-campus Class (OC) OC Class Notes: On the following days (8/21, 9/25, 10/2, 10/9, 10/23, 12/4) the course will be offered in the classroom with realtime videoconferencing/Movi and the class will be 10-1pm. The rest of the course will be on the Web via OnCourse site. Correct Code: “HD” 6 out of 16 classroom sessions leaves 10 of 16 class sessions offered online, or 63%. Since those 6 classroom sessions are offered using synchronous distance video, the code is “HD”. Instruction Mode

  17. Fall 2013 Example 8 Current Code = “HY” Days & Times: ARR Room: ARR Class Notes: Above class students will view an on-line lecture and meet twice weekly with an instructor in the assigned campus classroom. Each week, including the first week, students must view on-line lecture before lab sections. Correct Code: “HY” Although the day/time and room information is not clear, it appears that this course meets online 1 session of the 3 needed sessions per week, for 33% online. Instruction Mode

  18. Fall 2013 Example 9 Current Code = “HY” Days & Times: ARR Room: ARR Class Notes: Above class students will meet on campus up to three times, dates TBA. Some online work is also required. Correct Code: “OI” Up to 3 campus meetings would put this class at 13 online sessions out of 16, or 81% online. Instruction Mode

  19. Fall 2013 Example 10 Current Code = “OA” Days & Times: Th 9:30AM - 12:15PM Room: Wright 1111 Class Notes: Above class is taught via distance education. Correct Code: “OA” or “DO”? More information about the delivery method is needed – if this is synchronous video, then “DO”; if it is all online, then “OA” (and the time/room info need to be modified). Instruction Mode

  20. Fall 2013 Example 11 Current Code = “OA” Days & Times: Tu 1:00PM – 3:45PM Room: Wright 2222 Class Notes: Above class is taught at IU Bloomington campus. Correct Code: “P” The coding conflicts with the class information provided. Instruction Mode

  21. Fall 2013 Example 12 Current Code = “OA” Days & Times: ARR Room: ARR Class Notes: Above class is offered online through OnCourse. Correct Code: “OA” A straightforward example. Instruction Mode

  22. Fall 2013 Example 13 Current Code = “OA” Days & Times: ARR Room: ARR Class Notes: Above class will be taught online on Tuesday evenings. Correct Code: “OA” or “DO”? The class notes imply that the class is delivered synchronously, which would be “DO.” If it’s really online, the class notes should be clarified. Instruction Mode

  23. Fall 2013 Example 14 Current Code = “OA” Days & Times: We 6:00PM-9:30PM Room: Wright 1000 Class Notes: Above class will be taught online. Correct Code: “OA” or “P”? The room and time information here conflicts with the current code. Instruction Mode

  24. Fall 2013 Example 15 Current Code = “OA” Days & Times: We 6:00PM-8:40PM Room: Web-based Class (WB) Web Class Notes: Above class is taught via the web using live video streaming. Correct Code: “DO” The student must be present at a specific time to receive instruction. Instruction Mode

  25. Fall 2013 Example 16 Current Code = “OA” Days & Times: ARR Room: Web-based Class (WB) Web Class Notes: Above class is taught online. Students must attend an on-campus orientation session August 10, 2013 at 5:30 PM. Check oncourse for specific room assignment. Correct Code: “OI” The student must be present on campus at least once, so this course is not 100% online. Instruction Mode

  26. Fall 2013 Example 17 Current Code = “OI” Days & Times: Mo 8:30AM-9:45AM Room: Admin Bldg 100 Class Notes: This is a hybrid class (some classes will be in person and some will be online). Class meets face-to-face every Monday 8:30A-9:45A. Correct Code: “HY” This class looks like it meets once in the classroom and once online each week, which is 50% online. Instruction Mode

  27. Fall 2013 Example 18 Current Code = “HY” Days & Times: 6:00PM-8:40PM Room: TBA Class Notes: Hybrid course taught online with minimal classroom participation. Students choose one date for CPR: 9/23, 9/25 or 10/2 and one date for first aid: 11/11, 11/13, 11/18 or 11/20. Correct Code: “OI” There are only 2 required campus meetings, which leaves 14 of 16 class sessions, or 87%, online. Instruction Mode

  28. Fall 2013 Example 19 Current Code = “HY” Days & Times: Fr 11:00AM-12:15PM Room: Center Hall 200 Class Notes: <none> Correct Code: “P”? With no class notes the student will not know this is a hybrid class in SIS class search. Instruction Mode

  29. Fall 2013 Example 20 Current Code = “HY” Days & Times: Fr 1:00PM-2:15PM Room: Taylor Hall 2111 Class Notes: Above class is a hybrid course with significant online work and five mandatory on-campus sessions which meet on 8/23, 8/30, 9/13, 10/25 & 11/22/13. Correct Code: “HY” With 5 campus sessions, that leaves 11 of 16 sessions, or 69%, online. Instruction Mode
