Campaign. Promises. Consider the Promises of Jesus. We are in the midst of voting in an election where we are examining promises that politicians have made and in a similar way we began considering promises that Jesus made & whether He fulfilled them.

  1. Campaign Promises

Consider the Promises of Jesus We are in the midst of voting in an election where we are examining promises that politicians have made and in a similar way we began considering promises that Jesus made & whether He fulfilled them. Jesus promised that He would suffer & die which He accomplished but He appeared to fail because His disciples fled, Judas committed suicide, & Peter denied Him. Jesus promised that He would rise from the dead and even though He fulfilled it, the apostles didn’t believe the testimony of the women at first. Jesus made other promises we will consider tonight.

  3. Jesus Promised to Establish His Kingdom Jesus preached about the gospel of the kingdom on many occasions and that it was near. (Matthew 3:2; 4:17, 23; 9:35) Jesus gave the apostle Peter the keys to the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 16:18-19) We know that we are not still waiting for His kingdom to come because some of those whom He was speaking with would still be alive when it happened.(Matthew 16:28; Mark 9:1) Jesus said that the kingdom would come with power. (Mark 9:1) Where would it happen? Jerusalem (Luke 24:49).

Jesus Promised to Establish His Kingdom After Jesus died and came back to life, he preached to them for 40 days about the kingdom of God and they were told to wait in Jerusalem for what had been promised in a few days (Acts 1:3-5). The kingdom was established with power on the Day of Pentecost in Jerusalem as Peter preached the death, burial & resurrection of Christ (Acts 2:1-36). There were about 3,000 people who were baptized and the Lord was adding the saved to the church. (Acts 2:41, 47) Jesus established His kingdom in Acts 2 fulfilling what He had promised as recorded in Matthew 16:18-19.

  5. Jesus Promised to Establish His Kingdom The apostle Paul taught that those who had received the forgiveness of sins were in the kingdom of Christ (Colossians 1:13-14). The apostle John was in the kingdom along with the brethren from the seven churches of Asia. (Revelation 1:5-6, 9) We are not waiting for Jesus to set up a physical kingdom in Jerusalem, as He is already the King of Kings sitting at God’s right hand on David’s throne in a spiritual kingdom (Isa. 9:6-7; Jer. 23:5; Luke 1:31-33; Acts 2:30-33; 1 Tim. 6:15).

  6. Did Jesus Keep His Promises? We examine the track record of a candidate to see if he has kept His promises. Examine the track record of Jesus. He promised He would suffer & die and He fulfilled it. He promised He would rise again on the 3rd day and He did! He promised He would establish His kingdom & He did! Jesus made another promise. He promised eternal life to all who obey Him and condemnation to those who don’t. (John 3:36; Hebrews 5:8-9)

  7. Conclusion You have the freedom of choice to “vote” for who you want but there are eternal consequences. Voting for Jesus isn’t enough. You have to live for Him. Campaign workers send literature to tell others about their candidate. (We tell others about the gospel). Campaign workers make phone calls to encourage you to vote. (We invite friends to worship). Campaign workers attend political rallies to show their public support. (We worship God with the saints). This is one election where the winner will not be one with the most votes (Mt. 7:13-14; 2 Th. 2:14). Who will follow Jesus standing for the right?
