  2. Soil Health Management in West Bengal : Challenges--Historical & Environmental Has 8% of India’s population with 2.7% of the total area, Population Density (1029 per Sq. Km) puts tremendous pressure on land, Marginal and small farmers constitute about 96% of the total farmers, (2010-11 census) As on 2012-13,about 91.74% of the Cultivable Area of the State is under cultivation against a National average of 72.69%, putting huge pressure on natural resources. 75-80% of Total rainfall received during 04 rainy months, intensifying the threat of greater soil erosion, The Cultivable Area of the State is 56.73 lakh ha & Net Sown Area is 52.05 lakh ha. Total No. of Holding =71,23,000 & Average Holding size= 0.77 ha. Cropping Intensity(2012-13)=181.73%.

  3. Possible thrust Areas for better Soil Health Management A. From the published data of Cost of Cultivation of major crops, 1)Human Resource, 2) Nutrient &Fertilizer and 3) Irrigation cost are the first three weight carriers, B. Due to increasing cost of Chemical fertilizers & reduced availability of organic manure, soil fertility imbalance is an identified menace in days to come. C. Inclusion of “ Individual/Group of Farmer based Organic manure Production Centre” with a target of production of Vermi-compost/Compost/Green Leaf/Green manure/Biogas Slurry etc under Crop Demonstration Programme of all the crops @ at least 50% of the requirement of available nutrient for that crop to enrich the resource base of the farmers & Soil itself. D. This will help to increase the resource base of resource poor farmers & sustainably decrease the cost of cultivation. D. Nutrient management as per Soil Health card,

The present scenario of SHC generation in West Bengal : • Launched Web-based SHC generation in 2007. • Sent SMS alert to farmers as soon as SHC generated. • Till date almost 4.34 lakh SHC distributed to farmers. • 48,294 no. SHC distributed to farmers in 2013-14. • 27,000 no of SHC generated till August’14 in this financial year.

  8. OBJECTIVE 1. Web based SHC generation of at least 20 no. of farmers of each mouza of Hooghly district on the basis of analysis data of GPS based collected soil samples. 2. Distribution of SHC to the maximum farmers of that district. 3. Preparation of GPS based Mouza wise Digital District Soil Fertility Map of Hooghly district. This will be the pioneer work in preparation of Mouza wise fertility map , not only in the State , but perhaps in the country. 4. Monitoring of soil health management of Hoogly district
