  1. HYPER-V EARLY ADOPTION View From The Field Damian DavisVirtualisation ConsultantSilversands Ltdhttp://www.silversands.co.uk

  2. Agenda • Brief Introduction to Silversands • Siemens Standard Drives Hyper-V Rapid Deployment Program • Existing Environment • Aims and expectations • Hyper-V and SCVMM configuration • VMware integration • Operations Manager integration • Conclusion • Futures

  3. Silversands Ltd • Microsoft Consultancy operating for over 20 years • Advanced Infrastructure Solutions • Windows 2003, 2008, AD • Information Worker Solutions • MOSS • Security Solutions • ISA 2006, Forefront • Custom Development Solutions • MOSS, .NET, SQL2005 / 2008 • Unified Communications Solutions. • Office Communications Server • Exchange 2007

  4. Silversands Ltd - Virtualisation Microsoft • Hyper-V RDP early implementation • APP-V software delivery • Terminal Services Citrix • XenDesktop 2.1 solution trials progressing • Extensive XenApp solution designs VMware • VMware Authorised Consultancy Gold Partner since 2004 • VMware Infrastructure 3.x Enterprise solutions including Dual-Site configuration

  5. Silversands Customers

  6. Hyper-V Rapid Deployment ProgramSiemens Standard Drives • Manufacturing arm of Siemens Worldwide • Pro Microsoft organisation Using Windows, SQL2005, SCOM 2007, SCCM 2007, ProClarity, Exchange 2007, SharePoint + SCDPM Soon • Silversands Customer – We implemented their existing VMware Virtualisation platform.

  7. Siemens Key Aims For Hyper-V RDP • Prove Hyper-V Performance and Reliability • Prove High Availability capabilities • Manage existing VMware virtualisation environment with SCVMM • Investigate SCVMM to Opsmgr integration • Overall – prove if Hyper-V and SCVMM could offer an alternative platform to VMware Virtual Infrastructure long term • The RDP took place in April 2008 and lasted 12 days

  8. Already invested in Virtualisation – Why Change? • Further benefit from existing global Enterprise Agreement • Better integrate with Systems Center Operations Manager (Opsmgr) • Aim to reduce 3rd party product support • Single point of support for both guest OS and Host Server

  9. Core Solution Components Existing VMware ESX Cluster Storage Layer High Availability Distributed Resource Scheduling VMotion Stretched VLAN Hyper-V Cluster Management Layer Standby Cluster Live Cluster

  10. Storage Configuration Computer Room 1 Computer Room 2 Clustering Enabled Room 1 Failure LUN Replication

  11. Hyper-V Host Setup – Server Core No GUI Here! • start /w ocsetup Microsoft-Hyper-v • w32tm /config /update /syncfromflags:DOMHIER • netsh interface ipv4 set address name="" source=static address= mask= gateway= • netdom renamecomputer <ComputerName> /NewName:<NewComputerName> • WinRM quickconfig • slmgr.vbs –ato • localgroup Administrators /add <domain>\<username> • netdom join <ComputerName> /domain:<DomainName> /userd:<UserName> /passwordd:* • cscript C:\Windows\System32\ Scregedit.wsf /au /4 • cscript C:\Windows\System32\ Scregedit.wsf /ar 0 • serverWerOptin /query • netsh advfirewall set currentprofile settings remotemanagement enable • netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Remote Administration" new enable=yes • netsh firewall set icmpsetting 8 • sc query type= driver • pnputil -i -a <driverinf> • wevtutil el • wmic pagefileset where name=”<path/filename>” set InitialSize=<initialsize>,MaximumSize=<maxsize> • start /w ocsetup FailoverCluster-Core , MultipathIo , WindowsServerBackup, SNMP-SC • Wuauclt /detectnow Better still automate the server deployment process using the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (Update 1) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=3bd8561f-77ac-4400-a0c1-fe871c461a89&displaylang=en&tm

  12. Hyper-V Clustering • Cluster base configuration much simpler than W2K3 • No service account definition • New cluster validation process • Simpler Geo-Cluster networking • Easier resource configuration • Enhanced Quorum • VSS Integration • GPT disk support • Note: MSCS 2008 Clustering requires SCSI3 Persistent Reservations – can affect older arrays • Remember to apply the recommended cluster patch • http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951308

  13. Hyper-V Backup • April 2008 • Limited integration options for Hyper-V backup • Utilised built in volume shadow backup • Fairly complex backup and restore process • Now • Mainstream backup products support Hyper-V • Provide image level backup with file level recovery

  14. System Center VMM 2008 Available VIA Server Management Suite Enterprise (SMSE) or Standalone

  15. SCVMM To VMware VirtualCenter Integration • SCVMM to VMware Integration simple to configure • Extend SCVMM features e.g. Powershell integration • Extends Opsmgr coverage without utilising 3rd Party Tools • Intelligent placement enhancements • Will need to go back to VirtualCenter console in some cases

  16. SCVMM PRO-TIPS Experience • Actually fairly complex to configure even if Opsmgr is well managed. • Don’t expect a deluge of pro tips in the beginning. • MS recommend allowing a bedding in period before expecting VM performance tips to work well. • Extensible so should capabilities should improve over time as management packs are released. • Not an install and forget option – you definitely get what you put in.

  17. Summary – Were The Original Aims Achieved • Prove Hyper-V Performance and Reliability • Prove High Availability capabilities • Manage existing VMware virtualisation environment with SCVMM • Investigate SCVMM to SCOM integration Overall – prove if Hyper-V and SCVMM could offer an alternative platform to VMware Virtual Infrastructure

  18. Future Enhancements • Windows 2008 R2 • Hyper-V 2.0 • Live migrate • Cluster File System • Increased CPU Core support • Hot Add Hardware • Powershell 2.0 • Reporting Pack for SCVMM imminent

  19. Considerations for your own Hyper-V Proof of Concepts • Infrastructure planning and preparation key to achieving results • Network Setup • Storage Configuration • Management requirements • Consider sizing your virtualisation candidates to determine your POC layout • Ensure all the current patches are applied – makes a significant difference. • The Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit 3.2 is useful in identifying and sizing consolidation candidates
