April Showers Bring… • When king Henry VIII creates the Church of England the Separatists Break from the Church • The Pilgrims leave England for Holland and seek settlement in the North American Colonies • The Pilgrims land in New England and Signed the Mayflower Compact for Self Government and majority Rule

  4. Bring Mayflowers • During the first winter half the Pilgrims die • With help from the Native Americans, the pilgrims learned to hunt plant and fish • Pilgrims and Native Americans would celebrate peace as trade began in the colonies • New England became the Home of Religious Freedom

  5. Puritan At Heart • Puritans leave England for North America to escape the Church of England • During the Great Migration 20,000 Puritans come to New England • Puritans come to New England well prepared and thrived • Puritans would set up a Commonwealth where people worked for the good of the group

  6. One Way Street • Commonwealths would be run by congregations in town meetings who chose the general court and governor • The New England Way stresses duty, godliness, hard work and honesty • The Puritans led New England Growth and Education, requiring all children learn to read the Bible

  7. The FUN in FUNdamental • Some Puritans set up new colonies in Connecticut under the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut • In Connecticut, Non Church members could vote and governor’s powers were limited • John Wheelwright would set up a town in Exeter following the Mayflower Compact

The Rhode to Religious Freedom • Roger Williams opposed required church attendance and the taking of native American lands and sets up Rhode Island • Anne Hutchinson is also forced to leave Massachusetts for Rhode Island • Quakers faced religious persecution for their religious beliefs and their opinions on Native American Treatment • Due to their Harsh Treatment the Quakers Fled to Rhode Island

  9. Big Losses • Native Americans believed EVERYONE owned the land, Settlers Believed in Individual Ownership • Puritans fight Native Americans in King Philip’s War • Native Americans Lose the War, Lose their land, and Many Become Slaves
