MAHARASHTRA ASSOCIATION OF SOCIAL WORK EDUCATORS (MASWE)

1. MAHARASHTRA ASSOCIATION OF SOCIAL WORK EDUCATORS (MASWE) On the 5th Sept.(Teachers Day) 1993,Professional Social Work Educators in Maharashtra took a major leap Social Work Educators & Staff came together under the leadership & initative of Prof. A.Y.Mohite at Nagpur & Set up the “Maharashtra Association of Social Work Educators ”(MASWE)

2. MAHARASHTRA ASSOCIATION OF SOCIAL WORK EDUCATORS (MASWE) MASWE is the only state level organization of social work college employees in India, registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860. (Regd No. MAHA/139/95) MASWE is not a trade union but a “Movement” for the up-gradation of standards of Social Work Education & Practice & a platform to discuss various issues.

Objectives of MASWE • Promoting higher professional standards in • social work education. • Influencing the state policies pertaining to • socialwork educators, practice & related matters. • Promoting & Protecting the interest of social • workcollege employees in both service & non- • servicematters. • Promoting employment opportunities for • trainedsocial workers in both Government & • Non-Governmentalagencies.

Objectives of MASWE • To publish journal, news-letters & books • on social work education & related issues. • To organize workshops, seminars & • conferences, intended for thedevelopment of • social work education & profession. • To promote & co-ordinate research studies & • reports on social problems, social work • education and social work practice.

6. The Mission Statement & Objective of MASWE were framed after a lot of deliberations and serious discussions. It is our sincere intention to put each of the above objectives in practice as can be seen from the list of our programmes and initiatives till date.

Others Contributions of MASWE • Study on Juvenile Deaths Due to Malnutrition in the • tribal villages of Melghat (Dist- Amravati). • Publication of Maharashtra Journal of Social Work • (MJSW). • Publication of MASWE’s News Bulletin. • Publication of Directory of Social Work Colleges in • India. • Launching of MASWE’s website.

13. Inclusion of Social Work Subject in the list of • State Eligibility Test (SET) • Initiated Preparation of Draft Bill of • MaharashtraCouncil of Social Work • Education. MASWE hassubmitted it to • Govt.(Now Social Welfare Commissionorate, • Pune has forwarded it to Mantralaya for • further action )

MASWE’s ACHIEVEMENTS • Capacity Building of Teaching & Non-Teaching Staff-an • ongoing process. • Influencing policies of govt. regarding social work colleges • and employees. • Formed norms to calculate workload of social work • educators. • Providing a platform where social work colleges staff from • different parts of the state came together, discuss various • issues, share experiences and healthy practices.

MASWE’s ACHIEVEMENTS • MASWE is also “Resource pool” through which experts from • different fields are made available to social work colleges and • others. • MASWE’s office-bearers and members are nominated on • various govt. committees (e.g. Child Welfare Committees, • Juvenile Justice Boards, PITA Advisory Committees etc.) • and University Authorities (e.g. Senate, Faculty, Board of • Studies)

MASWE’s ACHIEVEMENTS However the major achievement of MASWE has been its success in solving many issues related to the Social Work Colleges & it’s teaching & non-teaching staff by taking course to peaceful & statutory means like Sending letters, Representations, Mass Sms, Sending of Rakhis, Meetings with Govt., Dharanas, Gheraos, Chain Hunger Strike, Fast unto Death, Mass Tonsure, Raising issues in Legislative Assembly & Council through MLAs & MLCs etc. The issues resolved are –

17. MASWE’s ACHIEVEMENTS • 5th pay to Teaching & Non-Teaching Staff. • Pay scale to Librarians. • Medical Reimbursement. • Leave Trave Concession. • Time-Bound Promotion to Non-Teaching staff. • Revival of contributory Provident Fund.

18. MASWE’s ACHIEVEMENTS Merging of 50 % D.A. Approval & fixation of many Teaching & Non- Teaching staff. Divisional Level Grievance RedressalCommittees. Grants to Social Work Colleges & Regular pay. Powers delegated by Social Welfare commissioner to Regional DyCommissioner for fixation as per 6thpay. 6thpay to Teaching & Non-Teaching Staff

19. MASWE’s ACHIEVEMENTS “ NOT A SINGLE PAISA WAS GIVEN AS BRIBE IN MASWE’S FIGHT FOR JUSTICE.”

20. This is a glimpse of MASWE’s 18Years journey.MASWE isputting in its best for the up-gradation of our profession capacity building ofourstaff & strengthening of our students. We realize that there are many more issues that need our attention. MASWE stands committed to its cause of taking professional Social Work to its pinnacle & our struggle will continue.
