  2. Hiyao Miyazaki • Born: January 5, 1941 • Akebono-cho, Bunkyō-ku, Tokyo, Japan • Began drawing airplanes while his father worked in his uncle’s aircraft manufacturing plant. • Aviation would become a major theme in his later work.

  3. Hayao Miyazaki • Director • Head of Studio Ghibli • Animator • Began as in-betweener • Manga-ka • Creates, writes, draws manga (Japanese comics) • Considered the Crème-de-la-crème of Japanese animation industry.

Hayao Miyazaki • While attending Toyotama High School, he saw Hakujaden, the first full-length Japanese anime movie. • Film makes him decide to become a comic artist • He had to learn to draw the human figure • Went to Gakushuin University, graduating with degrees in political science and economics in 1963 • A member of the Children’s Literature Research Club – only club that was similar to a manga club at the time

  5. Hayao Miyazaki • In 1963, joins Toei Dōga (Toei Animation) as an in-betweener. • No formal schooling for animation • Was trained for 3 months before being assigned to Watchdog Bow Wow
