  1. Hayao Miyazaki By: Paul Griffin Period 4 Intro to Animation

  2. Introduction • Animation has emerged as a form of entertainment all over the world • The animation of each region in the world can be very unique and show something about their culture • Just like music, animation is a form of art that can express many things such as emotions or ideas • Over time, animation has become more and more capable of putting our ideas onto the movie and T.V. screens

  3. Miyazaki Intro. • Miyazaki was born on January 5, 1941 in Tokyo, Japan • He is the cofounder of Studio Ghibli • He was not well known in the west until Miramax released Princess Mononoke in 1997 • Princess Mononoke was the highest-grossing film of all time in Japan, and the first animated film to win Picture of the Year at the Japanese Academy Awards • Many of his films share the theme of relationship between nature and technology and difficulty of maintaining a pacifist ethic • Many of Miyazaki’s films also demonstrate a strong sense of feminism

  4. Biography • Animation can also be used to show major events in a person’s life or to create analogies • During World War II, Miyazaki drew airplanes and developed a lifelong fascination with aviation • Miyazaki's films are full of imagination • His interest in animation began with Hakujaden, which has been described as "the first-ever Japanese feature length color anime.”

  5. Animation Style • Miyazaki frequently serves as both writer and director but is now not able to look over each frame as he used to • The script and storyboards are created together • Animation begins before the story is finished and storyboards are developing • Miyazaki has used traditional animation throughout the animation process, though CGI has been used since Princess Mononoke to give "a little boost of elegance". • In his 2008 film Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, Miyazaki has gone back to traditional hand-drawn animation for everything

  6. Traditional Animation • Also known as cel animation • A cel is the transparent sheet that objects are drawn on • Each Frame is drawn by hand • Oldest form of animation • Digital Ink and Paint is the same except instead of cels the drawings are scanned to computer

  7. CGI • Computer Generated Imagery • Application of 3D computer graphics • Used because effects are more easily controlled than physical processes

  8. Quotes • In an interview with the Financial Times, Miyazaki said "it's very important for me to retain the right ratio between working by hand and computer. I have learnt that balance now, how to use both and still be able to call my films 2D." • “Hand drawing on paper is the fundamental of animation.“ • “...children's souls are the inheritors of historical memory from previous generations.”

  9. Interesting Facts • Digital paint was used for the first time in parts of Princess Mononoke in order to meet release deadlines. • The last major feature film to use traditional ink and paint was Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke (1997) • In 2002, Spirited Away won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, the first anime film to win an Academy Award. • The company is well-known for its strict "no-edits" policy in licensing their films abroad

  10. Samples of Work

  11. Why Is He Important? • I believe that Miyazaki is important because he is one of the few artists that remains true to the origins of animation and he strives to keep it alive. • Miyazaki portrays many important ideas about life in general that we can certainly learn a lesson from in today’s world. • Miyazaki has helped pave the way for mainstream acceptance of anime in the U.S.

  12. Movie Review of Spirited Away • With none of the sentimentality of Disney nor the computerised sheen of Pixar, this traditional animé even blows the brilliant Finding Nemo out of the water. It's epic story is more imaginative, rousing and luscious than anything American animation has produced since the halcyon days of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. • Reviewed by Jamie Russellat www.bbc.co.uk

  13. Questions • What are some events in his life that have effected his films? • Miyazaki prefers to use what type of animation? • What is a cel?

  14. Answers • He lived during WWII, saw the first anime in Japan, his mom read to him when he was little and questioned many things, his father built plane parts and Miyazaki became interested in drawing planes • Miyazaki prefers to use traditional animation • A cel is the transparent sheet that objects are drawn on
