  3. What is Assessment? • The process of identifying what students know and are able to do • The most common form of feedback is assessment • An “assessment” occurs any time a teacher gathers information on student learning

  4. “Student achievement benefits when assessments are given relatively frequently as opposed to infrequently.” (Bangert-Drowns, J. Kulik, C. Kulik) • “Properly executed assessments can be an effective tool for enhancing student learning.” (Robert Marzano) • “Informative assessment isn’t an end itself, but the beginning of better instruction.” (Rick Stiggins) What do the experts say about assessment?

Practical Application of3 Types of Assessment Unobtrusive Assessment Student-Generated Assessment Obtrusive Assessment • A teacher focusing on basketball asks students to demonstrate the proper execution of a free throw. • During a basketball scrimmage, the teacher observes students’ form as they shoot free throws. • A student approaches the PE teacher and tells Mrs. Reeder that he’s been working on his free throw form at recess and at home. Could she come watch him shoot 10 free throws on the playground and assess him on his free throw form?

Identifying Levels of Assessment Items • There are three levels of assessment items: Level 4 Items • o Inferences and applications that go beyond what was explicitly taught Level 3 Items • o Complex ideas and processes that have been explicitly taught Level 2 Items • o Simpler details and processes that have been explicitly taught

  9. Ways to use levels of assessment items: • 1. When creating assessments, the teacher levels the items according to the 4, 3, 2 scale. • 2. When using preexisting assessments, the teacher identifies the levels of items on the assessment according to the 4, 3, 2 scale.
