  2. Hydroelectricity • Hydroelectricity is the term referring to electricity generated by hydropower; the production of electrical power through the use of the gravitational force of falling or flowing water • Hydroelectric generators convert mechanical energy into electricity

  3. Positive Effects :) • There are many positive effects of hydroelectricity: • Renewable resource • Does not produce any waste • Helps power many homes and cities • Reduce green house gases and does not release any

  4. Negative Effects :( • There are few negative effects: • Costly to build dams • Relies on rain and melting of snow to replenish water sources in rivers • Obstructs fish species seasonal migrations • Damages surrounding environment, erosion

World Wide Use • Most widely used source of renewable energy • Accounting for 16% of global electricity consumption • 3,427 terawatt-hours of electricity was produced in 2010 • World’s largest dam is the Gordon Dam in Tasmania • The world produces about 19% of this electricity • 150 countries use this method to produce energy • China is the largest producer of this style of energy

Generating methods • Conventional dams- traditional potential energy of dammed water driving a water turbine and generator • Pumped-storage dams- is a method of producing electricity to supply high peak demands by moving water between reservoirs at different elevations • Run-of-the-river hydroelectric stations- are those with small or no reservoir capacity, so that the water coming from up stream must be used for generation at that moment • Tidal power plants- make use of the daily rise and fall of ocean water due to tide. • Underground- make use of a large natural height difference between two waterways, such as a waterfall or mountain lake

  7. Economic Benefits • The cost of hydroelectricity is generally low. Making a very competitive source of renewable electricity. • Low power costs because of the elimination of fuel • Very long lives between 50-100 years of business • Operating labor costs is usually low because the plants are automated

Comparison with other methods of power generation • Hydroelectricity eliminates the flue gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion, including pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, dust, and mercury • Avoids the hazards of coal mining and the indirect health effects of coal emissions • Compared to nuclear power, hydroelectricity generates no nuclear waste, has none of the dangers associated with uranium mining, nor nuclear leaks. • Unlike uranium, hydroelectricity is also a renewable energy source.
