  1. IS CAN Bus – CiA WD 103 UpdateRick Ales Swagelok CompanyCPAC May 2006

  2. NeSSI Bus History • 2000-1 Wireless, Bluetooth preferred solution • 9/2001 Selected CAN bus as preferred solution • 7/2003 ODVA & NIST IS CAN workshops • 2/2004 Profibus PA selected for DoE project • 6/2004 IEEE p1451.6 Working group formed • 7/2004 Foundation Fieldbus for DoE project • 1/2005 IEEE p1451.6 IS CAN Draft Spec. • 3/2005 Fieldbus Foundation and CPAC announce FF • 5/2005 DoE project defunct. • 1/2006 Transition p1451.6 effort to CiA WD 103 • 3/22/06 CiA WD 103 Meeting. • 3/31/06 North America CiA office transitions to DE.

  4. IS CAN NeSSI Bus System

  5. IS CAN Major Parameters • The CAN communication model is described in /ISO11898-1/ and /CiA301/. • Single power source, co-cable was the only option considered. • Power bus specification is derived from commercially available IS power systems. • 9.5 Vdc @ 1.0 A Maximum • 10 Meter cable distance • M12, 5 circuit connector

  6. Why Only 10 Meters? • Since this system is expected to work with NAMUR IS solenoid valves, which require 7.7 volts. • IOMAX = 1 amp • VOMAX = 9.5 V • With typical 5% regulation, then: • VOTYP = 9.0 V, VOMIN = 8.6 V • For a 10 m @ 24 AWG, resistance is 0.87 ohms • 1 amp * 0.87 ohms = 0.9 V • Therefore, actual power delivered to the device could be: • VDEV MIN = 8.6 V – 0.9 V = 7.7 V

  8. System Power Parameters

  9. What is next? • Bill Seitz, President IXXAT to replace C. Menon as committee chair. • Sigrid Stramka, CAN in Automation, DE, assigned as CiA technical representative. • Next CiA WD 103/ IEEE 1451.6 teleconference to be scheduled for early June. • Update Draft Standard and circulate for general review & comment. • Develop & validate an apparatus example circuit.

  10. Discussion?
