Tones Expressed • Concern • Especially about what will happen and about keeping things secret • “Nobody in the place knew that I was leaving except the lady of the house, until an hour before I went.” • “Please keep the reason for my departure a secret until I talk to you, for those who warned me do not on any account want it known.”

  3. Worry • “I beg you with all my heart, for reverence of God, beware of Lord Moleyns and his men, however pleasantly they speak to you, and do not eat or drink with them; for they are so false that they cannot be trusted.”

  4. Frustration • “I am very surprised that you do not send me more news than you have done.” • “They let me know that various of Lord Moleyns’ men said that if they could get their hands on me they would carry me off and keep me in the castle. They wanted you to get me out again, and said that it would not cause you much heart-ache.”

Lord Moleyn had apocryphal evidence for the rights of the property that was false and untrue. • The relationship between Margery and Richard was kept covert because Margery’s parents did not approve of it. • Margaret’s dislike of Lord Moleyn is overt in her letters and was clear to anyone who read them.
