  1. TURNING TALENTS INTO WEALTH'THE KWALE CASE' By Patrick Tsangari Mtsami CEC member for Community Development, Youth, Women Empowerment and Social services County Government of Kwale

  2. INTRODUCTION • Every human being is bio-chemically unique. This means there are no two persons that are exactly alike in their natural endowments. • The implication of the above is that every person is a storehouse of talents

  3. WHAT IS A TALENT? • Talent is defined as a natural ability for being good at a particular activity- According to the Macmillan Dictionary • Talent means the ability to do things in an unusual or exceptional way. • There’s an inherent deposit of abilities inside every human being.

  4. TALENTS AND DEVELOPMENT IN KWALE COUNTY • Kwale County is endowed with rich natural resource base • One of this resource is the human resource • Kwale County has a labour force of 352,353 which is 49 % of the total population • However 30% of this labour force is either unemployed or underemployed majority of which are youth.

  5. Cont…. • Despite the abundant resources Kwale county is ranked among the poorest with over 70% of its households living below the poverty line.

  6. Why this disconnect ? Some of the reasons contributing to this disconnect (poverty in the midst of riches) include the following:- • Untapped human potentials – Undeveloped/Underdeveloped potential will never fetch any income, just as untapped crude oil lying thousands of feet below the surface of the earth generates no national income to the owner nation. • Our education system concentrates heavily on academics and pays little attention to other talents that are non academic in nature

  7. Our plans to turn talents into wealth
